I support the hire of CGM 110%, but also remember not being comfortable with the Gus bus a lot of times. Before GCM supposedly pulled the plug our offense had a great propensity to shoot itself in the foot. Delay of game, illegal formation, unable to get a play off after a timeout, unable to move the chains when we were ahead in the fourth quarter. None of these issues were the result of tempo. All of these defects were visible with the naked eye, and Ray Charles could have seen it, but the sunshine pumpers could not. I will never accept the fact that the offense stalled mainly because GGC asked Gus to slow it down. in 2011 we weren't able to get out of our own way to begin with

yes, they shot themselves in the foot to 107 points in the first three games and huge bunches of yards. They had also replaced 4 out of 5 spots on the OL and several other starters. The fact remains, the failure of the offense and the team rested with Gene Chizik and his terrible strategic decisions, his poor player personnel and discipline choices.

  • The query about where Bo lives answers itself.

  • Was lucky enough to be at AU during Bo and Barkley....my son is now a tenth grader and I can only hope that he will be fortunate enough to experience the next generation of AU legends!! WDE Bo knows Barkley may not be a role model but both are all in with Auburn....

Sure would like to know why Bo, a son of the state of Alabama would want to live in Chicago.

He is a businessman who also does a LOT for charities. Chicago has roughly 8 million people...... no brainier. Plus, I notice he shows up on The Plains quite often - especially when asked to.

Malzahn's supreme confidence in himself and his system has not been shaken by doubters.

Phillip, thanks for another great article. Here are a couple of points I thought of as I read it:

    1) A 3 star RS Freshman winning the Heisman should give pause to all those who follow the annual team recruiting rankings as if Auburn's future football life depended on it. And, despite the fact he had a redshirt year, this year was with a new offensive system brought in by a new coaching staff. Also a perfect example of why recruiting should be evaluated after a player uses up his eligibility. Of course, what's the fun of that?

    2) As I watched this year's collapse, I became convinced it was critical for AU to return to some type of high performance offensive system in order to compete successfully in the SEC. Hiring the guy who has invented his brand of HUNH and also bringing in his right-hand man gives us the best opportunity to develop an offense that should average 30-40 points/game. And as defenses catch up, CGM will innovate further and keep the pressure on opponents both offensively and defensively and allows us to become competitive again and recruit the players who best fit the system.

    3) I sent you a PM a few weeks ago resulting from an analysis I did on Auburn HCs. Basically, becoming the AU HC has significantly improved the efficacy and net worth of every coach taking the job since CRSJ took the position in '51, and has given all of them national stature. I thought that Chet Wynne was the last coach to leave AU to coach at another school, leaving after the '33 5-5 season to coach at UKy but I don't know the circumstances around his departure. His AU team won the Southern Conference championship in '32 with a 9-0-1 record in AU's last year as a member of that conference, becoming a founding member of the SEC in '33. No coach has ever left AU and achieved coaching or financial success that was even close to the success they had at Auburn and that includes "Iron Mike" Donahue who was wooed to LSU by offering him a higher salary, Wynne, Bowden or Tuberville, the last two leaving without a future job lined up.

    4) The 30 for 30 segment on Bo was one of the best and most positive installments in this really interesting historical sports series. I think it's one of the best things ESPN has ever done.
