#PMARSHONAU: Diminishing returns for bowl games

Could empty seats at bowl games be an ominous sign of things to come for college football?

  • Good read Phillip.
For me I enjoy watching college football on TV during the regular season almost any night of the week.
However, for a parent of a player, band member, or cheerleader, it certainly has to be an inconvenience to attend a game played on just about any night during the week, or all hours on a Saturday, and that's not to mention the season ticket holders, or walk-in fans .
Playing all the games strictly on Saturdays at 1:30 in the afternoon certainly was convenient and timely, but it wasn't too much of an inconvenience by occasionally playing at night, even if it was a Thursday night....occasionally...
Yet, now it seems that access to TV revenue has over-ruled self-control, discipline, restraint, and the very ones whom buy the tickets.

  • When rabid Florida fans won't make the trip "all the way" to New Orleans to see their team, ranked #3, play in the Sugar Bowl, you know something is wrong.

    Spot on.

I think you cant underestimate the impact of the economy on this too.

NASCAR has found the same thing to be true over the last few years and even bastions of NASCAR strength like Bristol and Talladega were awash in empty seats. I remember going to the Summer Bristol race and it was jam packed, now there's 40000 empty seats. Empty seats at Talladega? Hard to imagine.

We all have choices to make. For me, I cant afford to carry my wife and three kids to an Auburn game. She and I make good money but it's the choice between going to one football game or a week at the beach....and the AU game is on TV. That's honestly not that hard of a choice.

I love my Tigers but half a grand for a single game?

  • I think you are being a little too pessimistic, PM. The real problem is scheduling the games after the new year, and in being honest, when I reviewed the bowl match-ups after they came out, I said that this was the worst crop of match-ups in years. Like I said, we are not going through a bowl apocalypse. This year is a combo of bad games mixed with too many games after Jan 1. It appears that the Big conferences need to separate from mid tier conferences.

  • Remember when there were regional TV game blackouts? How times have changed.

  • I love the way PM makes you think. PM you are constantly looking at the game for what it is. You never sugarcoat and you always make your readers wonder what if. I wish more writers (and I say that with a laugh) actually attempted at mastering their trade.

  • The golden rule "He who has the gold makes the rules"
The days of starting games at 1:30 on Sat afternoons are gone.We now must submit to our Overlords in Bristol/NYC and play at 11 AM or on Thursday night.
And its not just the SEC. I have kids at FSU and we went to a noon kickoff game this season ( when FSU was ranked top 5) and the stadium was half full. We decided after that game to never return to a noon game again. The game day experience didn't exceed the cost of the weekend.

  • I give up my season tickets and a camper spot this year. cannot justify the cost to buy tickets for me, my wife and two kids.

  • Phillip said, "Here's the real question: How long will it be before we start seeing the same trends in regular-season games?

In the major programs, the costs of tickets and donations required to get them climb steadily. Hotels in college towns triple their rates and demand two-night minimums. Tailgating and other traditions are, if not discouraged, certainly not encouraged."

This is what I have complained about for years at our own university. We donate a small fortune, just to be able to buy tickets. Ticket prices continually rise. A hotel room is probably more than monthly rent at an apartment. And then, the university does all it can to keep you from parking nearby and getting close enough to tailgate. Yet, year after year, we continue to pay our money and tailgate as close to the stadium as we can. It definitely cannot go on forever, at least for us.

  • Have you seen the cost of tuition lately? It's gone up an average of 8% per year since the 1980s.

There are lots of us longtime season ticket holders who will drop off the rolls this year. Though I can afford it, it's ridiculous to pay $500+ on tickets to watch us play the $h1tty teams we play most weekends. I'm gonna start saving more of my cash for the tuition side.

The gameday experience has suffered in all sports. Between the drunks and punks, I'd rather just watch it on a 60" TV in Hi-def.

  • Yes, PM makes one think and to some of us that ain't easy. But leaving the money aspects, some games have possibly unintended payoffs for the winning team. Louisville it has been said has a 35 percent Florida roster make up and there is not much doubt that their coach is going someplace pretty good and if Louisville is smart, they will manage to hold on to him for a while. They played hard nosed football with hard to stop passing against a coach that knows that game and recruits in one of the most fertile fields in the country. So far, Florida gets what it really wants out of Floida, but will that be forever? Maybe. But, Louisville's quarterback is from Florida and one of the best I've watched this year. And Louisville certainly didn't hurt their shining finish in outplaying Florida when the iron was not hammerd to its final form. Louisville is a program that, if not already in, kicked open the door to the big leagues last night. Muschanp knew it was more than a little step.

  • Have you ever been to a bowl game? Went to the Chick-fil-a bowl game last year and it costs a small fortune to go from the room to food and everything in between. It is ridiculous the cost of food in the Georgia Dome. Really it is not a lot of fun. Imagine spending all that money and looking like Florida did last night. Regular season games too, not very nice hotels and $300 a night rates. I think it was smart Auburn did not expand their stadium. At some point lots of folks are just going to stay home.

  • Much of the problem in the matchups is the silly pairings. #3 team from this conference plays #4 from that conference and so on. Its the much of the same stuff and poor old LSU is probably tired of the chicken burger bowl. This year I only watched one bowl game so far because I kind of feel like I have seen these before and I am usually one to watch any college football game that come on during the season. I do plan to continue going to JH for all the home games but probably wont go to a bowl game that is not BCS championship outside New years day due to work reasons. I believe there are lots of people that fall into those categories.

  • "I think you cant underestimate the impact of the economy on this too."

I think this is the major factor and if this economy doesn't turn around you will see it affect the regular season. Those season ticket holders that used to attend every game will start selling their tickets to select ed games. Those rich donors that help fund athletics are going to cut back and it will show quickly . When times are hard entertainment dollars are the first to go.
