  • This one shocked me. In my mind Yox would be the first person Gus would call to tell him he had a job. Unexpected would be an understatement.

  • I'm not sure what I've done or written to make some of you feel like you do. I do not engage in sensationalism, and this is as far from sensationalism as you can get. Too close? Too close to what? You can just go ahead and say I'm unprofessional if that's the way you feel. You can believe that if you want because somebody on some other message board says it, but it's BS.

Kevin Yoxall was a major part of Auburn football for 13 years. I did not one time question Malzahn's decision to do what he feels comfortable doing. I've defended it every day since Tuesday. I did not start any debate over what happened last season or didn't. I wrote about Kevin Yoxall the person I knew, nothing more. I'm growing weary of being called unprofessional, which is what you are saying wen you say I am "too close."

I didn't say Yoxall should or should not have been kept. I didn't even mention last season. This was about none of that. That's a debate someone else chose to start in response to this column. Don't read between the lines. I don't write there.

  • PM, Every time you address these people who are calling you out they multiply and speak louder. Ignore the hate. You do a great job. Don't let those people get you down.

  • How much damage did chiz do to coach yox?I seem to remember a prior post stating workouts were somewhat voluntary and the players no longer feared him.i feel his pain and wish him the very best.just like the coordinators if he was left to do his job like he had in the past things might be different.

  • At about the third week of the season an employee in S&C told me that the penalties for not busting tail , or finishing early, or not even showing up had been severly reduced. On whose authority he would not say. If this is true then Yox couldn't stay. His authority was undermined and, once lost, it was gone, never to return with this group of players.

I haven't seen anybody comment on the guaranteed scholarships that CGC promised our guys. I like the concept of not arbitrarily being able to kick a kid to the curb, but could that be responsible for our less motivated players slacking off? Maybe fumbles aren't the only reason some players did not get much playing time.

  • I wish Yox the best and know without a shadow of a doubt he will find work at a great organization. The man is a machine and helps boys become men. I'm thankful for all he did, WDE sir and thank you again

  • Philip, thanks for a great story about an Auburn man with great character . It seems like everyone these days are looking for someone to blame and the reasons for last season.Anyone can write about those facts but it takes a writer with great character to write about the people who love Auburn by painting a picture of a man behind the job.

Phillip This was a business move, plain and simple. The morale of this team was in the toilet. The fact that Yox does not see that is exactly the point here. You obviously really like him and it is easy to tell that by the tone of the article but, once again, the fact that he does not think that a lot of those kids quit this year is exactly why he has to go. Everybody respects him and he will land on his feet easily, but, as hard as it may be to face, he helped play a part on what you yourself called one of the worst teams in conference history. I'm not saying these boys are weak but they were getting physically whipped every single week. Yox is not without blame here. You make it sound like we are throwing the baby out with the bath water and that is not true. Just like Chizik, Yox can't see the forest for the trees right now. The rebuilding of the attitude here has to start at the basic level and Gus needs people he can trust that buy in to exactly the way he wants to go about doing that. I really like your writing and love this site Phillip but this is sensationalism going on in this piece. We all appreciate your honesty and the hard work and long hours you put in to bring us the best Auburn coverage on the planet, but if you can't see that he needs to go, you are guilty of being too close to it right now as well. Hard decisions have to be made and Gus is making them. I know it's not your job to be a fan, but a piece like this comes across, to me, as pretty self indulgent and can only serve to get people's emotions stirred up and create more divisiveness on these boards. Don't you think we have enough of that already? Just saying

This is by far the best post here. Time for Yox to go. If he's a great guy then let him go with his dignity. He must have watched different games then I did. I saw guys getting shoved around, quitting, and happy just to grab their blockers in a loving embrace as opposed to shed their blockers and tackle somebody with some authority. I wish Nick Fairley would consult too. If Cam was the grace, Fairley was the mean. Time to bring back some nasty..

  • I dont know the man. Im sure he is a great guy. Im sure he can retire a wealthy man. But I dont think for a minute that he bears NO REPONSIBLITY FOR THIS MESS. He is no different than any other coach. In this case they ALL need to go. As far as being mad about the perception many on this team "quit" I dissagree. I guess if your making a nice salary and your standing on the sidelines watching the game for free and you dont travel several hours to get there, then you probably do see things different. From my perspective sitting in the sun in section 46 I saw more than a few that DAMN well did quit. This put it all on CHizik is a load a bs.

There is somebody to question everything. This column did not say one word critical of what Malzahn did. It was about a man who gave 13 years of his life to Auburn. People need to stop trying to find ulterior motives in what I write. I don't do that. I wrote about I man I've known and respect. If I'd wanted to criticize Gus Malzahn for firing anybody, I would have. I didn't, not one time.

    Phillip,

I dont believe he was questioning your motives, just the tone of the article.

And I must say that Righty's analysis of the situation at Auburn was pretty spot on, even if his judgements regarding you personally were not. It's impossible to look at the 2012 team, as talented as it was, and say that they did not quit. Are you all aware that in terms of point differential OUR 2012 AUBURN TIGERS WERE THE WORST TEAM IN SEC HISTORY? Let that sink in- the worst point differential margin in the history of the Southeastern Conference. On a team loaded with 4 and 5 stars. They either quit mentally or physically, and as great a man and coach as Yoxhall was, he'd been in Auburn for almost 15 years and it was simply time for all involved to move on. WDE.
