#PMARSHONAU: Coach Yox - A man's man

For Kevin Yoxall, it was always the players who mattered most.

No, I really didn't, though I started to wonder when I asked him about it Tuesday night and he was evasive. Yox didn't expect it either.

  • I will support Coach Malzahn 100% but I honestly don't like this move. Coach Yox will be deeply missed and I personally don't think he deserved to be let go. Thank you for everything Coach Yox and WDE.

    This, every word of it.

  • This seems to be the biggest controversial firings Malzahn has done. I don't understand this one. Phillip do you know of any particular reasoning that he wouldn't be kept? I worry about the moral of the players right now. I hope Malzahn is right about all of this. I have to trust that he is. I just thought if any one would be safe it would have been Yox and Brother Chette. I assume Chette has been kept thus far.

If you have to ask why I love Auburn so much...never mind

  • I am guessing, but that is what most message board posters do. I think CGM just wants to have a fresh, clean slate to start with. All his hires. JMO.

This was a business move, plain and simple. The morale of this team was in the toilet. The fact that Yox does not see that is exactly the point here. You obviously really like him and it is easy to tell that by the tone of the article but, once again, the fact that he does not think that a lot of those kids quit this year is exactly why he has to go. Everybody respects him and he will land on his feet easily, but, as hard as it may be to face, he helped play a part on what you yourself called one of the worst teams in conference history. I'm not saying these boys are weak but they were getting physically whipped every single week. Yox is not without blame here. You make it sound like we are throwing the baby out with the bath water and that is not true. Just like Chizik, Yox can't see the forest for the trees right now. The rebuilding of the attitude here has to start at the basic level and Gus needs people he can trust that buy in to exactly the way he wants to go about doing that. I really like your writing and love this site Phillip but this is sensationalism going on in this piece. We all appreciate your honesty and the hard work and long hours you put in to bring us the best Auburn coverage on the planet, but if you can't see that he needs to go, you are guilty of being too close to it right now as well. Hard decisions have to be made and Gus is making them. I know it's not your job to be a fan, but a piece like this comes across, to me, as pretty self indulgent and can only serve to get people's emotions stirred up and create more divisiveness on these boards. Don't you think we have enough of that already?
    Just saying

  • Great article Phillip.
With all due repects to Coach Yoxall, I've had more than one bama and even Auburn fans question if CGM has REAL control over the football program as Saban supposedly does.
It seems to me that Coach Malzahn has answered that doubt!

Can't blame him... Hate to see Yox go, but can't blame him at all for starting completely over.

Great post. +1. I am sorry that Coach Yoxall wasn't retained, but it was time for a fresh
start. This is actually good for Yox as well because he can go to a new school and be a
part of a new program and philosophy. Best of luck to Yoxall. WDE.

  • Thanks for the peek behind the curtain. We so often don't get to see the human side of things, and it was great to get this glimpse into Yox. More appreciation for what he did, and how he did it.

  • Don't you think that we have enough of that already? With those words a thoughtful piece was concluded and I muist say that it's a piece with which I must agree. It's just flat tough being the leader when you must do something you'd a lot rather not. If you do it, it's a measure of your grit. Gus has got it, in spades. For that matter and although I think he's werong, so has Phillip Marshall.

  • Coach Yox got a nod in the 2012 version of the video game NCAA Football. Your created player could get Yox-ercised for a big strength bonus. Thanks Yox, War Eagle! And good luck!
