Does he have any experience coaching RBs?

He was a running back coach from 92-01 at South Carolina, Clemson and then Ole Miss, has also coached TEs, WRs, and DBs during his career.

PM: Why do you think he will be RB coach rather than one of the other positions he's coached?

  • I don't feel sorry for pros either. They're paid big bucks to perform. That, however, doens't give anyone the right to be nasty. In the college ranks it's different. Living in Atlanta, I was bombarded with some of the nastiest, ugliest, most uncivilized talk about Cam Newton I've ever heard. And, it wasn't just UGA fans. I got it from bammers too. Fans of those two programs are the most hateful, hypocritical, nasty, mean and uneducated people I've ever encountered. I swear, they must all be republicans.
Bet I had you all in my corner for a minute.

  • Interesting to see that Basaccia, someone that seems so far removed from the SEC, has actually been in Jordan-Hare on two occasions.

He's 1-2 vs Auburn in his career. The first game was a loss to Auburn in the Peach Bowl while coaching running backs and ST with Clemson in 1997. He was then at JHS twice while coaching with Cutcliffe at Ole Miss. His team won in 1999 then lost to us in 2001.

In all, he's spent 14 years in college football in the south, starting as a GA with South Carolina in 1988, where he stayed until going to Clemson in 1994, followed by his Ole Miss stint from 99 to 01.

Seems like he'd be a great hire.

  • Great article! Very excited about the staff CGM is putting together. I also share your opinion about the crassness that has sadly become the norm for so much of society. Reflection, thoughtfulness & dignity have been sacrificed for unfiltered feelings, shock & entertainment. Seems the lowest common denominator is reigning supreme. For that reason I am glad that there are still writers like yourself doing what you do.

Happy New Year & War Eagle!

Because the plan is for him to coach running backs, which is what he's coached in addition to special teams for his entire career.

  • PM,

Heard some rumblings about the possibility of Dameyune Craig still having interest in coming to Auburn and that possibly heating back up, so I figured I'd ask the expert on this to confirm or deny it for me. Have you heard anything about that? I'll refrain from getting my hopes up until I hear back. Thanks for all your work

Big deal about Morris. Mike Shannahan's downfield blocking scheme produced thousand yard rushers such as Terrell Davis, Orlandas Gary (neither did much at UGA) Mike Bell, Clinton Portis. Morris is a typical system TB under MS.

Clinton Portis was great at Miami and was consistently good every year at Washington. Terrell Davis, if memory serves, was injured. I'm no Shanahan fan, but he can recognize RB talent. System or not, Alfred Morris rushed for 1400+ yds this season as a rookie, but I suppose you've done that...

That was a big topic last week. As of last Friday, Dameyune had not heard anything more from Auburn and had not contacted Auburn himself. I'd never say never, but I don't expect that to change.

Or maybe the Redskins' RB coach and offensive line. Seriously, we had a 1000 yard rusher on a pitiful team. I'm not so worried about this recruiting year as much as I am interested in seeing if this coaching staff can field a "team". Auburn has players on the roster who were recruited by all the major programs. How much can they learn, and will they be eager to learn it in 8 months? I have a feeling that some of the big name recruits of the last 3 or 4 years will not be able to hack it under the new staff. I hope I am wrong, and these guys are just as hungry as the rest of us for a new direction. War Eagle.

    Agreed.

I know what Phillip has said about what happened under Chizik. The more I think about the Chizik era, the more I think Gus is a great hire and will do great things.

The 2008 season was about as abysmal as the 2012 season and we arguably had much less talent on the 2008 team. In 2009, Gus came in and set records with Chris Todd at QB. And in 2009 the coaches did a pretty admirable job of utilizing players to their potential.

Based on that and the fact that we have better talent (on paper) and that many of the players were recruited for Gus' system, I have to believe the odds are in our favor for a quick turnaround.

The wildcard is how the players respond. If we end up with attrition because of lack of work ethic or whatever, then so be it. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I just don't get how we could "coach up" Tuberville players and "coach down" some of the big recruits under Chizik.
