Great piece Philip, I had a friend in Birmingham who grew up in Ensley and said that Bama wanted him to come play linebacker. Have you ever heard that? Also if I remember correctly the recruiting experts had Alan Evans and Brent Fullwood rated higher as running backs that year.

Bo was the most incredible athlete I have ever seen. He changed the direction of Auburn football from the moment he stepped on campus. I was a high school senior in Birmingham when he signed and I had heard his name but had no idea the difference he would end up making on the Auburn/ Bama rivalry, a true game changer and a true inspiration to generations of Auburn players and fans.

I was honored to have been able to hear Bo speak at my graduation in 2009 and shake his hand. He gave a fantastic speech.

Probably never will see again such a combination of physicality, and athleticism. I read something a couple of years ago, and I wonder if it is true. It said he hit the top of the Superdome with the football by throwing it, and that he still holds the record for the fasted 40 time for any football player at 4.2 something. It also said that when he arrived at practice as a freshman, he would be already be past Randy Campbell the QB every time he turned to hand off to him. Campbell complained to the coaches that he was lining up wrong, but in fact he was that just much faster than anyone was accounting for.

Vincent "Bo" Jackson who "ran a 4.12 40 yard dash," still possesses what is "considered the fastest verifiable 40 time at an NFL combine."

I coached at a Birmingham City school that had McAdory on it's regional schedule.
I had been working at the school about 1 month. The head coach I worked for was preparing for the game and NOT ONE TIME did he mention Bo's running ability, He DID MENTION that they had a "Stud linebacker" that we would attempt to run right at. Bo' whipped us all night long. I don't recall how many yards he got on us, not anything excessive (over 100).
A side note, one of our pitchers threw the ball that Bo hit about 400 or so feet. A state record. Funny story: Bo fouled off 2 balls, our pitcher chased the second one to the fence in an attempt to catch it, he walked by Bo, looked at Bo and said "you're mine now", the rest is history!

1) Alan Evans was higher ranked but they were both in the top 10 in the state. Bo was, like, 5 or 6, Alan was 2 or 3 spots higher.
2) The story I always heard was that the al coach recruiting him told him he probably wouldn't start until he was a junior.
3) Brent Fullwood was in the next class
