  • Great piece Philip,
I had a friend in Birmingham who grew up in Ensley and said that Bama wanted him to come play linebacker. Have you ever heard that?
Also if I remember correctly the recruiting experts had Alan Evans and Brent Fullwood rated higher as running backs that year.

Alan Evans was Mr. Football in Al. Highly recruited but fizzled quick at AU.

  • Evans was rated higher. Fullwood was a year or two behind Bo. True, Alabama told him he would play defense/LB.

I don't think Alabama recruited him as a linebacker, though he would have been a great one. Your friend might be confusing him and Cornelius Bennett, who had committed to Auburn as a running back and switched to Alabama. Alan Evans was the No. 1 running back prospect in the country the year Bo signed. Fullwood signed with Auburn in 1983.

Re Bennett, that is probably correct and Bennett was from Ensley as well.
Re Fullwood, I was thinking they were the same class and Fullwood redshirted.

  • Great writeup Philip. Bo is the greatest athlete to ever set foot on the Auburn campus. His physique looked chizeled out of stone and it wasn't from working with weights....just natural look and ability. Football was his best sport yet they are still talking about his HR in Athens. His first Monday Night Football was unforgettable as was his baseball running catch and then continuing to run up the wall. It was jaw dropping. I like to think that God gave Bo special abilities and God isn't disappointed. War Eagle!!!!

  • Probably never will see again such a combination of physicality, and athleticism. I read something a couple of years ago, and I wonder if it is true. It said he hit the top of the Superdome with the football by throwing it, and that he still holds the record for the fasted 40 time for any football player at 4.2 something. It also said that when he arrived at practice as a freshman, he would be already be past Randy Campbell the QB every time he turned to hand off to him. Campbell complained to the coaches that he was lining up wrong, but in fact he was that just much faster than anyone was accounting for.

  • Thanks for the great write up Phillip. I'm really looking forward to the program tonight.

One of the things I'll never forget was in 1987 when Bo was a rookie with the Raiders, Brian Bosworth had publicly stated he would teach Bo a lesson when they played the Seahawks. In the game, Bo ran wild. In one unforgettable instance, The "Boz" waited for Bo near the goal line. Bo looked him up and ran over him for the touchdown. Boz had been the most arrogant player in the league until that play. Bosworth never got his swagger back and finished up without coming close to what had been expected from him.

  • I sat next to Bo in a class at Auburn and he was always nice and had a good sense of humor. The thing that stood out to me was a time that he brought a girl a letter in an envelope. I was friends with the girl and asked her what the letter was for and she said that her little sister had asked Bo if he would write her & you know what? He did.

  • GREAT article Phillip!! Wouldn't miss the 30 for 30 for anything. I just hope they do his life (as well as his God-given talent for sports) the respect he deserves. I think it would do the current players and recruits a great deal of justice to watch the 30 for 30 special too. While I was a kid growing up I didn't have a whole lot of heroes, but Bo was one of them. I really hated seeing the injury that eventually ended his sports career, but I am very glad his life has worked out for him like it has. All the special runs(college and pro), all the broken bats(hehe), and all the great stories from people who competed against him. He is a very special individual, and for the players and recruits who have had the pleasure to be fortunate enough to have been in his prescence should really know what kind of a Champion he really is. I am so proud he is part of the AUburn Family!!

    War Damn Eagle!!

  • I graduated at the same time Bo did. He sat on the coliseum floor and walked across the stage like a normal student. He made a special day even more so for all of us. Very cool.

  • I remember when Bo was responsible for a power outage from a homerun over left-center field into the switch-yard.
