#PMARSHONAU: A painful process

  • This is not an attempt to defend Barbee. But for those who always say the remedy is firing the coach, consider this. The last coach with more SEC wins than losses last coached at Auburn 60 years ago. Coach Ellis and Coach Smith, both very good coaches, are often cited as proof that you can have a winning BB program at Auburn. Consider that Ellis' record in SEC games at Auburn was 73-87 and Sonny Smith's SEC record was 84-114. The problem with firing a coach is that you have to start all over. The current players all leave because of the coaching change. Then the new coach, who will not be a bigger name than Jeff Lebo or Tony Barbee, will have to play the first year with a few freshmen that all other schools passed on and a few junior college hacks. We won't be competitive for two or three years waiting for our coach to "get his guys" and we'll be right back where we are today with 75% of the fan base screaming "fire the coach."

I wish the leadership, if we have any, would empanel a blue ribbon commission of legitimate experts on college basketball to study all the problems that are discussed daily on this and other boards (recruiting woes, retention issues, shoe companies, UA, AAU, entrance requirements, coaching, etc.) and report to the leadership what problems are real and what can be done to improve the situation, if anything. Then we make some changes in accordance with the recommendations and move forward. If that includes changing coaches, then change coaches. But there has to be more to the problem than Jeff Lebo or Tony Barbee.

Replacing the coach without this information seems senseless to me. I would rather us abandon the program and use the new building for other sports. It is pretty darn easy to jump on the "fire the coach" bandwagon, and that bandwagon is moving full speed right now.

Commissions don't accomplish anything - you must be located in the heart of commission land D.C. We need leadership - when leader's don't know what to do they appoint a commission then their out is well I did what the commission recommended. Forget it!!

  • Loosing recruits, AAU issues, whatever! it still does not explain the same insanity I witness each time I go to a game. The offense has been on life suppport the whole season. We do the same thing game after game. Spread everyone out, set a high pick for the point guard and all stand around a watch nothing happen until we have to throw up a prayer with 5 sec on the shot clock. No matter who sets the pick (chubb or ADT), or who the point guard is (wallace or sully) that move is useless!! Most teams have decided to let both defensive players defend the guard because we never try to dish to the big man. This causes our point guard to have to pull back out and start over. If Sullly is able to penetrate we get a turnover more often than we get a positive play and if it's Wallace then nobody defends him because he is not a threat to shoot. The only time it seems to work is if Denson is the point. BINGO!! Maybe we should try Denson up top more often. I have also seen nights where the team moves in and out, multiple picks, passes, etc and the offense look really good. However, those moments have been rare and the direction of the offense by our coaches has been dismal at best. Bad offense leads to lazy defense which leads to loosing and severe attitude issues. Then I look and see Barbee's reaction and he just throws his hands up. I don't like his demeanor on the court and i dont like him calling out our players in the media, even if they need a little butt chewing!!

I'm located in the heart of Auburn. You get some leadership and I will forget about a commission. Continuing to fire and hire a coach every 3 or 4 years is like beating your head on a post. Accept it or not, there are some problems with Auburn BB beyond the coach. They need to be addressed. Just notice the number of players on the roster from the state of Alabama. That should give you a clue.

That's a little oversimplified, don't you think? ... Yes, "blue-ribbon commissions" can be used to do nothing but produce reports that gather dust. They can also be good-faith efforts and political necessities to help shape public opinion and rally a majority behind a cause that would otherwise fail. (Think about Auburn's coaching search. Think some top players at Auburn knew that the wider AU public needed three accomplished lettermen standing alongside Jay Jacobs when he announced a new coach?) It's not always as simple as just making a decision and launching. If only life were that simple. This is really not an analysis on Auburn, per se. Just noting that you'd do well to acknowledge that life is about more than backbone and grenades.

I'm reading some Lincoln these days. He was a master strategist, always thinking several moves ahead of everyone around him. That led many of his contemporaries, including his supporters and his Cabinet members, called him all manner of names along the lines of equivocator, weakling, wuss (and worse). History doesn't view him that way now, does it?
