First-year head coach Gus Malzahn doing all the right things, offering scholarships to middle school boys, a class act nears the end, Ellis Johnson on Clowney.
It's not so much secret anymore. Our one year experienced head coach has a lot of talent that many coaches paid millions, and with many years experience, some at Auburn, haven't had. We haven't lead pipe assurance that his teams will show so much, but, it's like re-building an engine. If one orders pistons six inches in diameter and twelve in number, that engine isn't meant for a lawn mower, and Malzahn's coaches aren't meant for continued development of high school teams. It's not really smart to expect too much, but one believes that in this case, great expectations may not be out of reason.
You can drop the "under the circumstances" statement. Auburn's class was strong enough to stand on its own without excuses.

It's obvious to me that Gus understands that being a champion requires year round dedication. He will instill this attitude into the players and weed out the ones that don't have that in them. I am very excited to have Gus and his staff on our side.
I agree that great things are to come, In regards to Clowney, yes he is a great player, but now tell me who had better numbers out of him and Lawson if I might ask PM, I believe Lawson and Daniels are just as good!!!!!WDE

PM, Is there anything more you can add re: F.Sullivan's falling out of favor with CTB? I agree, it is sad to see. Has he quit or has the coach decided to forget the older guys and play the kids for future experience? When our basketball teams lacks so much it is amazing to see our best player riding the pine. Thanks in advance.
Gus has restored confidence and hope to the AU Family
Today is a great day to love Auburn, a little better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow.
Clowney is a Beast!
He now gives Coach Johnson someone to always look for in recruiting for AU, hopefully he'll find one...no two!
Barbee can't run Frankie off because he is a senior. CTB has run me off though. After seeing his team get worse during the year after showing real promise early, I'm afraid we can't blame the athletes for that.
Attitude is Everything
Yeah I think I would tell them that I appreciated the offer but that they would need to wait until his junior year before they could actually talk to my son. I don't need a bunch of high profile college coaches filling my sons head with God knows what before he has reached an age to be able to process it. Recruiting him for 2 years would be plenty of time to form a relationship. I would also set a limit on the number of times my phone would ring too. Any more than the specified amount would mean automatic expulsion of your school. D1, DII, DIII, Junior College. They will all educate my son. School will always be first and sports second.
It's funny that everyone, including bama fans, thought it was funny when USC offered that 8th grade QB a scholly a few years back. Bet now the bama fans think its another smart move by the illustrious omnipotent one.
The only possible plus I can see in this early of an offer would be that the kid now knows that college is possible and could work on making sure that his grades are good enough to qualify, or can work hard to graduate early. Either way he would be better prepared to handle the RIGORS(thanks flashcam) of being a true student athlete in college.

Great has always PM! WDE!!!
Ever to Conquer!!
Great article Phillip. I too have been amazed and impressed with CGM's assembly of coaches. I was somewhat skeptical when he was announced but it didn't take long before he showed me and everyone else why the special committee members had total confidence in him and his ability to get AU back where we belong. I cannot wait to see the product he puts on the field in 6 mos!
