  • OK. We need to be careful not to take an internet board too seriously. This is the place where people with no authority to influence anything come to vent. I am amused by some posts, puzzled by some and occasionally learn something from some. But I refuse to take any very seriously.

That's it. That's all any of us can do. We have to stop assuming that we know who will and won't work and to what extent. There are no guarantees...

Also, this McBigun character pisses me off too with the freaking negativity. I mean damn, he could depress a bride on her wedding day...

Let's say we hire an existing coach from a mid-level program. Malzahn? Chris Peterson? Butch Jones?

Do you know if you're going to get an Urban Meyer that went 38-8 at Bowling Green and Utah, and then went 65-15 at Florida? Or do you know if you're going to get a Dan Hawkins that went 53-11 at Boise State, and then went 19-39 at Colorado?

Let's say we hire a defensive coordinator from a great program. Kirby Smart? Mark Stoops?

Do you know if you're going to get Ron Zook that ended up going 57-65 at Florida and Illinois? Or do you know if you're going to get a Bob Stoops that has gone 147-36 at Oklahoma?

Let's say we hire a successful coach from an existing BCS conference school. Mike Gundy? Jimbo Fisher?

Do we get Brian Kelly that went 24-6 at Cincinnati, and is now 26-10 at Notre Dame? Or do we get a Rich Rodriguez that went 60-26 at West Virginia, but 15-22 at Michigan?

Let's say we hire a coach with a mediocre record at an existing BCS conference school. James Franklin? Mike Riley?

Do we get Houston Nutt that went 42-38 in the SEC at Arkansas, and then 10-22 in the SEC at Ole Miss? Or do we get Les Miles that went 28-21 at Oklahoma State and has gone 84-19 at LSU?

Let's say we hire an NFL guy. Jeff Fisher?

Do we get Pete Carroll that went 33-31 in the NFL, getting fired twice, but then went 83-19 at USC? Or do we get Bill Callahan that went 15-17 and got fired as well, and then went 27-22 at Nebraska?

Everyone wants to hire the guy that can beat Nick Saban. I've got news for everyone....there is no way to know who that might be. Short of stealing a Bob Stoops or Pete Carroll from their current job, all you can do is roll the dice and take a chance on someone and hope that they come to Auburn, take advantage of all we have to offer, and utilize those things effectively to lead our program to great success.

That doesn't mean you go out and hire the next 5-19 guy that prays and cares for kids. I can find that guy at a YMCA. But it does mean that all we can do is hire someone that shows some promise and then hope he becomes the next great coach at Auburn.

Les Miles became great AFTER he got to LSU. Bob Stoops became great AFTER he got to Oklahoma. Jimmy Johnson became great AFTER he got to Miami. Nick Saban became great AFTER he got to LSU. Pete Carroll became great AFTER he got to USC. Pat Dye became great AFTER he got to Auburn.

All any of us can do is wait, see who the man is going to be, then get behind him and give him every opportunity to become great...AFTER he gets to Auburn. If your goal is to hire someone that is ALREADY great, prepare to be let down. It's not impossible....but it's just not how it usually works. Greatness usually comes after a coach lands at the right place at the right time.

Until then, everyone can save themselves some heart burn and sleepless nights by just conceding that all we can do is wait and see who it will be. As long as it's not another 5-19 project or some random bystander like Shawn Watson that we turn into a lottery winner, we just need to prepare to roll with whoever it is and hope he's the answer.

    hell of a post.

  • I'm with you. I supported every Auburn coach until they proved they didn't deserve it. The Auburn family needs to hope the Pres and the AD make a good choice and get behind that choice.

Or you can act like a top ten program and have the leadership and guts to go out and hire a PROVEN coach, one that has a track record, instead of acting like an underachiever and crossing our fingers and hoping that our "mid-major" hire MIGHT work out.

Make me a list of the Top 10 programs that hired your version of a "proven" coach (hires that exclude non-BCS level coaches and all coordinators). I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it's definitely not the norm.

    Florida - Meyer - non-BCS
    Oklahoma - coordinator
    Georgia - Coordinator
LSU - Saban...is 34-24-1 at Michigan State proven? If so, we should hire Dantonio tomorrow, he has a better record at MSU than Saban had.
LSU part 2 - Miles....is 24-21 at Oklahoma State proven?
USC - Carroll...33-31, fired twice in the NFL....is that proven?
    Ohio State - Tressel.....1-AA
    Oregon - coordinator (from 1-AA)

In fact, I went down the list of the 20 teams with the most wins in the last decade, and I think the only ones (BCS programs) that hired what could be considered a "proven" coach were Texas (Mack Brown had UNC in the top 10), and Alabama (Saban had won a title at LSU).

Everyone else came from a coordinator spot, a non-BCS program, or were unproven at their prior BCS position.

Look out there at the options...show me the next "Mack Brown" or the available "Nick Saban", because I don't see them jumping off the paper.

Most likely, we're going to hire someone in a similar fashion to the way Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, LSU, etc. all did. What would be your suggestion....specifically, not including vague suggestions like "proven coach"?

Very good point. Coaches are like players some peak in high school, some peak in college and some peak in the pros. And the rare few are at the top from HS to pro. I don't have an answer to who should be the next coach at Auburn and I have said 4 years is enough time to prove oneself as a head coach but I'm pretty sure whether Chiz stays or a new coach is chosen, next year will be just as frustrating as this if Auburn isn't winning games.

  • jadennis is the Logic Master. Well done again.

In reading your post it jumps out at me that your last list of coaches who became great AFTER they got somewhere all were strong Type A's with a "buy in or get out" mentality. No coddling. Intense. Focused. And all were great football minds.

Let's find that guy...no matter where he is...and then give him space.
