Our "great" teams are better than your "great" teams

  • In a recent thread about "home field advantage", I listed how Auburn stands up against Top 10 teams in JHS. As we all expected, we've been very successful in that situation.

That thread go me thinking about something else. Not "how have we fared against great teams at home?", but "how have we fared against great teams...when WE also had a great team?". In other words, when our great teams have faced other great teams....who comes out on top? Do our supposed "Top 10" teams usually stand up to other supposed "Top 10" teams, or do we wilt against top competition.

Since the AP Poll came out in 1936, there are only 18 teams in all of football that have been good enough (Top 10) often enough to have played at least 30 games against other Top 10 teams. Most of them are exactly who you would expect...it's the powerhouse teams...plus a couple you might not have guessed.

So how have the powers-that-be done as Top 10 teams against other Top 10 teams? Well, when speaking to our SEC brethren, we can say...."our great teams are better than your great teams", and we have the winning percentage to prove it!

(Keep in mind, I'm using "Top 10 at the end of the year", so we know these were teams that likely finished the season with no more than 2 losses....not a team that started #9 in the preseason but finished 6-6).

    1. .675 - Miami (25-12-0)
    2. .664 - Oklahoma (50-25-1)
    3. .644 - USC (36-19-4)
    4. .632 - Auburn (21-12-1)
    5. .590 - Notre Dame (45-30-8)
    6. .552 - Texas (32-26-0)
    7. .549 - Florida (22-18-1)
    8. .536 - Florida St. (22-19-1)
    9. .511 - LSU (23-22-0)
    10. .492 - Ohio St. (27-28-4)
    11. .490 - Tennessee (22-23-4)
    12. .479 - Alabama (33-36-1)
    13. .435 - Georgia (13-17-1)
    14. .424 - Nebraska (28-38-0)
    15. .408 - Penn St. (15-22-1)
    16. .383 - Michigan (28-46-3)
    17. .382 - UCLA (11-19-4)
    18. .283 - Arkansas (8-21-1)

    Notes:
Auburn is an impressive 17-6 against the SEC in Top 10 vs Top 10 match-ups:
    5-3 vs Alabama
    4-0 vs Florida
    3-0 vs Georgia
    3-1 vs Tennessee
    2-2 vs LSU

Auburn is 10-1 in the last 11 head-to-head Top 10 match ups dating back to 1989, including 7-0 since 2004. The last time AU lost a Top 10 head-to-head match-up was @ Alabama in 1994.

Oklahoma is 14-4 against Nebraska and 11-5 against Texas in head-to-head Top 10 match ups.

Miami is 1-2 against Florida, but 9-1 against Florida State in head-to-head Top 10 match ups.

Arkansas has a 3-10 record vs the SEC, a 1-8 record against Texas, and 4-3-1 vs everyone else.

    Penn State was 8-4 from 1981 to 1990, but 5-12-1 before 1981, and 3-6 after 1990.

For all the flack they catch, Notre Dame is 5-1 vs current SEC schools in head-to-head Top 10 match ups. Of course, all of those games are 1970 to 1990. They are 12-9-4 against their Big Ten rivals.

I used to fight the fight on the Blue Board daily (see the GW under my av). But I just couldn't keep up with both boards, do my job, be a husband and a father, etc. So the Blue Board was the casualty. But by all means, use anything I post whenever you deem it appropriate for defending and furthering truth regarding Auburn. Ignorance can't only be overcome with education. Teach them my brothas.

The details definitely aren't stored in my head, but it's all out there on the internet. You just have to know enough to know when something isn't accurate and then know what to look up to prove it.

Like if an Alabama fan says the typical line of "you only beat us when we're down" comment. I've looked up enough stuff over the years to know we have a winning record against them when we're both Top 10 teams. I don't necessarily remember the exact record, but I know it generally enough that it sends me off to research the exact record and post it so that the "you only beat us when we're down" looks pretty ridiculous (we're 5-3).

Or if a Georgia fan tries to say we have no chance to beat them because they're ranked #7 and we're ranked #19 and we're playing in Athens. Well, I know enough to know that's not accurate. So I look it up, and what do you know, they are 1-3 against us in Athens when they're in the Top 10 and we're ranked 11-25. Doesn't mean we'd win that next one, but they definitely have nothing to brag about in that scenario in the past.

So you have to have a good enough general knowledge to run things through a good filter. But I don't know all these details off the top of my head. I just have a decent idea of what to look up to prove or disprove a perception or misconception about different programs and scenarios. And most of all...I enjoy it.
