Opinions & Discussion - Basketball

  • We are 4 games away from the start of the SEC schedule. The team is 4-5 but could very easily be 7-2. With Chris Denson back from being academically ineligible we are playing much better basketball, albeit against lesser competition. That being said, we suffered a big loss when (starting) PF Sharieff Adamu was released from the team by Coach Barbee for violation of team rules. I just want to know what everyone's opinion is on the direction of the program.

    A) Over-Under .500 Win pct in the SEC (I think right at .500 or a little under, we have a really hard SEC schedule this year)

    B) If you were Coach Barbee, your starting 5:
    G-Denson
    G-Sullivan
    F-N. Johnson
    F-Payne
    C-Chubb
    6th man- Jordan Price

    C) Do you think the program is headed in the right direction, why or why not?
    I personally think that we are slowly moving in the right direction, but we need to quit losing players to discipline problems and we need to establish a better offensive identity. I think Denson brings just what this team needed in his ability to slash and either score or dish the ball out to one of our many sharpshooters when the D crashes. I expect good things and am excited about the talent we have... now its time for Barbee to turn from great recruiter to great coach.

  • I think ADT and Price needs to be in the starting 5. Price is a scoring machine and also has the ability to drive the ball. ADT may have a foul or so more than Chubb, but his impact defensively is definitely noticeable, also think he is better offensively. With Chubb, great effort but I feel alike it's a 5-4 disadvantage for us when he's on the floor.

    Thing about ADT is he gets pushed around by bigger post players, then fouls them because he jumps at everything. Believe me, I hope he steps up due to Chubb's butter fingers, but I have been pleasently surprised by Chubb's 15-18 ft Jumper. Personally I don't think ADT is nearly as good as Chubb on Offense.. he doesn't really ever score, other than drop step dunks or offensive rebound put backs. I think Price should definitely play more minutes (take them from Shaq), but he is a guard and I wouldn't start him over Denson or Sullivan at this point.... JMHO thanks for this though, like I said... I'm in serious need of basketball discussion/debate!!!

    Get the dog, then your need for basketball conversation should take a backseat, for a little bit, anyway biggrin

  • I'm glad you have good positive thoughts reagrding your bball discussion! I too think they are heading in the right direction! I also agree with the post that mentions its time for CBarbee to become the great coach! We already know he's a great recruiter. Im very impressed with this new class of players that are new this year as well as the phenomenal group that just signed in the early signing period to come in next year.... It's on! We just gotta be patient as all this new talent develops and matures... WDE

  • I don't think the SEC is as strong this year so we have a chance to beat anyone on our schedule and FL is not on our schedule. We do play Kentucky and Vandy twice but both lost lots from last year's teams. tony is not going to play JP enough until he gets better on defense. I think he is worth giving up something on defense but Coach Barbee demands good defense. A BIG key is will Auburn fans pack the house for home games to give us a bigger advantage! It really does make a difference. We are headed in the right direction. Never dreamed one player could make so much difference but Chris Denson is a natural. He can drive to the basket with his right or left hand. Just watching him is worth the price of admission.

    I would have disagreed with you until last night's SEC debacle... Looking up for us Tigers now!

    I think we are still a year away (excited for next year's Freshmen).. but Barbee is doing a heck of a job recruiting. Just ready to see that talent translate to W's.

    Jordan Price is on FIRE right now... He shot something like 90% last game(14 pts) and is 8/8 from 3pt range in the last 2 games. Definitely worth more minutes!

    Thanks man, he's a handful and he definitely took up a lot of my time as a puppy. He's about 80lbs and only 9 months old so he's gonna be a big one haha

  • We will get better as the season goes on. This is will TB's best team with his best record so far. Still not a 500 team in the SEC. NIT a real possibility. I don't disagree with your starting lineup. Not sure that matters so much given that 8 or 9 will get significant playing time. As Price commits more to defense and Shaq improves his jump shot, both will see more PT at Payne's expense. I had hoped Greene would help at point, but no sign so far that will happen.
    This team deserves our support and really responds to a rowdy Arena crowd.
