Dr. Gogue,

It is with overwhelming disappointment that I send you this correspondence today. I am also sending this despite a great deal of uncertainty that you will even read this letter. I do not intend to influence your decision regarding the athletic department at Auburn University one way or another. However, I do intend to encourage you to come out one way or another and make a stand. In case you are not aware the Auburn Family is hurting right now. We are hurting because the longer that there is no decision, the more the speculation grows, the more the resentment grows, the more the family grows divided.

I understand that your policy is and has always been that you evaluate coaches at the end of a season so you are able to look at the program as a whole. However, as you know, this is not Utah State University, New Mexico State University, or the University of Houston. This is a university that has an athletic department with a budget that is larger than the budgets of those three remaining universities combined. Where there is more money there is more passion, and there should be more accountability.

The Auburn Creed says, “I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men.” Whether you have plans to transition the athletic department, football program, or make no changes what so ever, please make a statement so that Auburn people will know. Please stop having discussions behind the scenes and make a stand. Having made a decision and not disclosing that ahead of time is not being honest. It is not being honest with the athletic department staff, the coaches, the student athletes, the student body, the fans, and most of all it is not being honest with yourself.

To conclude, and to borrow another line from the Auburn Creed, the Auburn Family will stand behind the university with, “a spirit that is not afraid.” We just need the leader to stand up and show us the vision.
