Offensive style under Loeffler...

  • PM or BM or anyone who knows... what will our style be next year? I saw Loeffler's press conference where he said, "I like em all"... referring to spread, pro style, etc... I didn't watch Temple any last year, so my question is, what will we be running? I really hope we are starting to shy away from the spread with the zone read. That's getting annoying. Kinda hoping we are moving towards a west coast or pro style offense... any thoughts?

  • Zone read worked out pretty well with Cam Newton ...

He ran a more "pro-style offense" prior to coming to UF in 2009. He worked the last 3 years under Steve Adazio running Urban Meyer's more run-based spread. My guess is that it will be mostly pro-style, but will incorporate elements of the Meyer offense to take advantage of the talent we have.

You're going to see a lot of zone blocking in any modern offense. The rule changes about how the refs would call holding back in the 1980s more or less killed the old school style wishbone/option-type offenses.

  • Appreciate the response... but we don't have Cam Newton anymore, or Dyer... I'm tired of bubble screens and short dink and dunk passes associated with the spread. I hope you're right and we are going towards the pro style. That seems like it could attract more recruits, and bigger recruits also (size and weight). Was Temple a spread team???

  • Thanks Phillip, it's kinda hard to get a read on this guy so far.

Well, there are a lot more spread style QB's than west coast offense style QB's to be recruited. Also, much of the attraction that AU towards recruits was Malzahn and his offense. Recruits knew that Malzahn would find a way to get the ball in their hands. Our offensive recruiting has been pretty good the past three years.

I guarantee you we continue to run the zone-read with Frazier, as well as a lot of bubble screens, etc. But we won't be running the hurry up no huddle, and we will actually take snaps from under center. I'm thankful for that.

  • We have got to get the ball to our guys (Reed, Bray, McCaleb, Coates, etc.) in the open field. Gus was credited with being very creative but I do not believe we were good at this in his offense. In Lutz and Blake we have NFL receivers to complement those guys. The OL should be significantly more talented and that should help. How Frazier plays will be the key.

New England runs a "version" of our offense now or vice versa with those dump passes, the short dink dunk passes and they let their play makers make the plays. The difference is Tom Brady isnt looking to run where our QB may be sometimes, and last year it was harder for Mosley who can't really run to work that side of the ball.

You will see a mixture of things this next year, and probably a little more line up under center a little more, then shut gun, zone read all the time.

  • I hope we see a lot of throws to Tight Ends. New England, NO, Carolina have great success throwing to athletic TEs and Auburn has a great one and two in the waiting in Parks and Fuse. This would open many more options in the running and passing game.
