OTL Good and Bad...

  • i think their discussion is legitimate. do i enjoy it overshadowing the national championship, no. do i think we are guilty of anything, as an institution no. do we have rouge alumni, who doesn't. i don't think the ncaa would have let us play in the nc if they thought we had a legitimate case in the making. i think somehow they would have stepped in and put the hammer down on cam. he's gone now, so the story will slowly fade away only to be brought back up the next nc we play for. finebaum, i felt, wan't as bad on otl as i expected. he keeps things hanging in the balance so you'll listen for more. he's should be on fox news the way he thrives on speculation. i trust everything that au undercover tells us. it is not in their interest to lie to us and then have all they say turn on them and lose our support. they are in the know, espn/finebaum & company need the controversy to keep people interested. finebaum only questions if we will keep the title. there is no accusation, just a to be continued statement. he knows bamers butter his bread.

  • Auburn the "program" isn't under investigation, never has been, as we all know.

However, the NCAA investigation into the eligibility of Cam apparently is ongoing.....at least they are still poking around Cecil's life, we know that much.

They are two different things. It's a different arm of the NCAA that would investigate player eligibility as opposed to investigating an entire program. They simply aren't the same thing. So someone in the media can say "the investigation is still going on" and be telling the truth. They aren't making that up. It's just that most people read that to mean Auburn is under investigation, which it is not.

While it is annoying to read, "this thing isn't over for Auburn", that is true to some extent. The fact that they are still looking into Cecil and Cam, indirectly means Auburn still stands a chance at being affected down the road. I agree with Phillip that it's likely over as far as AU is concerned, but as someone noted in an earlier post, we can't know for sure until they close the book on Cecil and Cam, which hasn't happened yet.

You have to understand how these things work. Auburn siimply cannot do that. As for Cecil Newton, his being at the game violated no NCAA rule or policy. Even Logan Young, who was found guilty by the NCAA of paying tens of thousands of dollars for a recruit and disassociated from the Alabama program, continued to go to Alabama games. What in the world could Auburn have done to stop it?

To tthe "Cecil at the game" issue, there is nothing Auburn could have done to stop... well, whatever it was that actually happened, since we don't know what that was. But what Auburn COULD do is, when a loudmouthed reporter from USA Today states that Auburn showed lack of institutional control by "allowing" Cecil to attend the game, simply issue a statement that outlines the rules... and explain how Auburn did nothing to violate said rules.

But I consider that a minor matter. What really gets to me is when I see a reporter state, AS A FACT, that "Auburn is being investigated by the NCAA and the FBI." Now, my Journalism degree was a looong time ago, but I think I remember enough to know that "freedom of the press" is not a license to print lies. But these lies --if they ARE lies-- are being written, being printed, and being taken as the gospel truth... and Auburn's response, some might think, is silent acknowledgment that they aren't lies at all.

Of course, if they aren't lies, some of us are going to be feeling very stupid before too long, aren't we?

Slimebaum and others are banking on something coming out of the McGregor case. Keep your fingers crossed. Remember the FBI got involved with that but they usually don't go public with their findings, which will likely come out when and if Mcgregor goes to trial.

McGregor's statement said he's never been involved with college recruiting, athletes, or pay for play. I know it's McGregor but the reason I believe his quote is that he and his atty knew there were wire taps and if this had any wheels they would have remained hush. I've also said if we're this stupid then throw the book @ us.
