OTL Good and Bad...

  • Well the bad news about Outside the Lines' and their discussion of Cam was a lot of the same rumor, innuendo, and assumption about Auburn being "under investigation."

The good news: Nothing new was discussed or came to light. It was the same things people have been saying all along and trying to present it as "breaking news." And as far as I'm concerned, no news is good news in this case.

  • I have heard that Finebaum has turned against us now after taking up for Cam all year. Now he and others from ESPN has been bringing up "near future sanctions" coming from NCAA. Even Joe Schad every tweet today has been anti Auburn. I really wish the NCAA/SEC would step up to protect one of its on.

  • It's all about ratings. The championship game was the highest cable show ever. A lot of that was due to the publicity about Cam - good and bad - over the last several months. I think if we just try to ignore it that things will get better in the near future.

  • It would be nice, but it's not happening from the looks. But like I said, nothing new came from this "report." All the same stuff these people have been saying the whole time this has been going on.

  • Auburn will be fine as long as the NCAA is not swayed by ESPN, Auburn haters or whoever and sticks to the facts and does things their way which it looks like they have done so far.

  • The list of entities that are making me mad continues to grow, and I think it's about time to add two more: the NCAA, and as much as I hate to say it, Auburn.

If there is NO truth to these NCAA rumors, then the NCAA needs to come out and say it. It's hurting our perception, it's getting in the way of our enjoyment, and it could be hurting recruiting.

And if the NCAA isn't going to say anything, then Auburn needs to. Instead, though, it's as if we have painted a giant target on our butt, bent over, and told ESPN et al to "Kick Here."

Sure, if we're innocent of all charges, then everything will be great in the end. But what are we losing in the meantime?

And if we're NOT innocent of everything (and I still think we are) then it's time Auburn acknowledged that there are issues. Otherwise, those of us who are defending Auburn are going to be looking really stupid soon.

  • I agree that nothing said on OTL was new information, with one notable exception. Jay Jacobs issued a statement before the NCG that Auburn and Cecil Newton mutually agreed that Cecil wouldn't be at the game. However, Cecil was seen hugging Cam after the game. Did he have a right to hug and congratulate his son, or even to attend the game? IMO, yes. But the point is that by reaching an agreement with Jacobs and then violating at least the spirit of said agreement, Cecil Newton invited unnecessary scrutiny and embarrassment to himself, his son and Auburn. If there is anything to be learned from the last few months is that, fairly or unfairly, the harsh glare of the spotlight is on the Newtons and Auburn. Why offer even the slightest opportunity for something to be twisted? More importantly, why break an agreement with Jay Jacobs? Please understand I admire Cam and appreciate all he has done for Auburn. But sometimes it seems his dad doesn't do him any favors. As for Finebaum, he has always been a bandwagon-jumper, but I have felt he has been mostly fair and mostly defended Cam and Auburn. Seems to me that his main problem is with Cecil, and he is hard on him. JMHO

  • I understand your frustration Ice Tiger; I get ticked off as well over this incessant regurgitation of the same rumors. But the truth is, all of this is just rehash.

As for the NCAA however, they've said what needed to be said. There's no reason to go back and forth with the media. Any further defense of Auburn will just dredge up a media narrative that someone (or someones) at the NCAA somehow "favor" Auburn and the whole thing gets rolling again.

As for Auburn? I'm glad the AU leadership is letting this die without commenting. If they issued any statement it would be parsed and twisted to fit the narrative of the day--and would kick up another firestorm.

This story is beginning to die down. In a week the football media will turn to recruiting; Auburn will slip off of the front pages. By spring, Cam Newton--God bless him for what he's done for our program--will be drafted and the media can't kick him around any more.

    The facts are these:
    * Auburn won the national championship
    * It won't be taken away

At some point the media will realize this and while we will never get an apology, they will finally decide to quit bringing it up.

  • I agree with you. Once Newton begins his preparations for the NFL draft, the media will focus on his ability to play at the next level (my opinion, he's a top 10 pick and any team looking for a QB would be foolish not to draft him).

And for college, focus will be towards recruiting and when spring practice comes, the onus will be on if AU can replace Cam.

I think story could die down unless something new comes up, which PM has stated, AU hasn't been investigated yet for anything.

  • "The Machine" at uat has FineScum in their pocket. How do you think he has survived in the pro-bama market for 30 years? It's not because he's supported AU 90% of the time.

    FineScum is an moon kisser.

I'm not expecting a back-and-forth between NCAA and the media. But if we're NOT under investigation and someone in the media says we ARE, there is no reason for them not to say "No, we are NOT investigation Auburn." You're right that long-winded explanations would just lead to word twisting, so I say don't give them many words to twist. It's hard to twist "no." (And besides, it's not like we're getting good press because the NCAA is silent; no one in the media has any reason whatsoever to treat NCAA silence as anything but 100% confirmation.)

If I thought it was going to be allowed to die down, I would try to be patient. But I don't think that will be the case. Just today, ESPN devoted an entire show to the "scandal," and the repercussions. There was little if any mention of "if," only "when." (Though I did learn that most Auburn people "expect the title to be stripped soon." Since I have yet to talk to ONE fan who believes this, I was especially surprised that I'm in a distinct minority.)

In addition to ESPN's rants, we've got Thamel digging up a problem from seven years ago, Evans trying his hardest to dig up dirt regarding our recruits from Louisiana, the radio mob (Barker, Finebaum, Bruno, etc.) talking about this "bombshell" that will hit any day now, and on and on and on. I think it's even more orchestrated than before. At first, all sides were coming at us with the same story; now we've got different stories coming from all sides.

I do believe that Auburn is the good guy in all of this. But I also believe that evil triumphs when good men do nothing. And from my seat, the good men are doing nothing.

  • Finebaum is a very calculating man. As Auburn was on a collision course with an undefeated season it was in his interests to have a positive spin on Cam and Auburn to attract more casual listeners who don't usually tune in. Now that the mission is complete, those casual listeners are enjoying waking up every day knowing that Auburn are national champs, and are no longer tuning in. Stirring the pot is Finebaum's way of trying to keep people listening. I fell into his trap during the season. I live in Atlanta and it is a much better show than what we get here, but I probably won't be a regular listener of his or any sports talk show until next year's season is right around the corner.

  • F-Bombs just a front runner, he figures with Cam gone Bammer will rise to the top again. OTL and others just need to fill up air time, they haven't said one thing that points to Auburn and any wrong doing. This is driven by a lot of things, USC's getting hammered, Bammer getting undressed by the NCAA a few years ago and Ohio State and the Big 10 being exposed. Give it a couple of more weeks and it's dead.

  • The breaking story was Cecil coming into the stadium after the game-said this has threw up red flags to the NCAA and prompted another investigation. You just can't make this stuff up but somehow they're doing it.

  • anything's possible. Maybe Sabin or the "REC" planted an AU supporter programed to "go rogue" and start offering AU players extra benefits? Maybe he paid Cecil Newton? Point is, this is all total speculation and, now that cam has decided to go pro, nobody really cares.

  • ESPN wants to push its own agenda as do the others. As PM has said, Auburn hasn't even been investigated by the NCAA.
Unless something comes out that no one knows about, Auburn is not being investigated despite what the idiots on BSPN say.
