I am looking to buy my soon to be wife a pistol. I know that some of you are avid shooters and know more than I do. Something small, accurate and fun to shoot. Something that would get the job done if it absolutely had to be done. She probably would not take it with her but something that could be concealed. I would like a 40 but I don't know if she could handle it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Glock compact 40 would be ideal. Very little recoil, with PLENTY of stopping power.

  • Bought a Ruger SR40c. My wife liked shooting it and could pull the slide. It also has an ambidextrous (sp) safety. Very smooth shooting pistol.

  • Former Marine Corps Combat Marksmanship Instructor here. Ive taught a lot of females to shoot in my day, the .22 round is more effective than people think, the .380 is pointless, the 9mm round is awesome if you use a Critical Duty or Defense round, .40 has too much "pop" for most females (yes more than a .45ACP), and a lot of .45 pistols are just too big for their liking (see Springfield XDs for exception).

But BY FAR, the best small shooter Ive ever bought for myself or for a female or any person looking to carry a compact handgun that handles extrememly well is the Smith & Wesson MP 9mm Compact. Not the Shield version. Just the regular compact. Beautiful weapon and handles superior to most. I bought one for my little sister and she absolutely loves it. She doesnt even believe in gun control anymore and she is a member of the NRA now.

  • If you can find a Smith & Wesson MP9 Shield, BUY it...but good luck with that. Otherwise, I would recommend a Ruger LC9 LaserMax...I actually have 2 of the Ruger's for sale, but I live in Virginia...

Yeah, I forgot to mention there is a shortage of the M&P Shields. Cannot hardly find them anywhere. Was lucky enough to walk into a store one day and they had some left from their last shipment.

Same here...that is why I have the 2 LC9's for sale...bought them because I had given up on the M&P 9 Shield, then a week later walked in the store and they had one...well, they didnt have it for long, I bought it and love it...unfortunately, I won't get to keep it for long as it is my 22yo daughter's Christmas present...along with a Concealed Carry Course and personal defense course...may just keep one of the LC9's for an additional concealed..I currently have a Glcok 19 and a Glock 23...

I would say go to a range and try different handguns to see what she likes. The best pistol is one that feels good in your hands and that you will be inclined to carry with you. That being said, the S&W Airweight 642 is great for concealed carry. The girls in my house carry the following: S&W Airweight 642 .38+p, S&W Bodyguard .38+p, and a Ruger LCP .380.

I'm a 1911 guy and I don't leave home without my Springfield Range Officer.

Good friends are hard to find. Enjoy every moment you have with them.

  • "Countless tales of up close and personal pistol fighting emerged from WWI. The bottom line was that when Americans shot Germans with Colt .45 automatics, the Germans tended to fall down and die. When Germans shot Americans with their 9mm Luger pistols, the Americans tended to become indignant and kill the German who shot them, and then walk to an aid station to either die a lingering death or recover completely. Thus was born the reputation of the .45 automatic as a "legendary manstopper," and the long-standing American conviction that the 9mm automatic was an impotent wimp thing that would make your wife a widow if you trusted your life to it."

    Here's to John Browning. cheers

My advise, try before you buy. I know that if you ask Sheriff Curry in Shelby county he would tell you to make sure she holds and shoots the gun before you buy her one. The most important thing is that she is comfortable and capable of operating all the functions of the pistol, what ever make or model. Now, with that out of the way, my wife and I have a Ruger LC9. I would recommend a 9mm be the lowest you go because when you need to stop a threat you want to make sure you are doing as much damage with each bullet fired as possible.

Do not buy her any weapons until after your first big post-wedding fight. You need to be sure she isn't going to use it on you. biggrin
