This classic rivalry continues tonight as they meet for the 233rd time. Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone had missed one of the 1,563 commercials for it on ESPN.
I find that they are typically worth watching, as the rivalry history is as rich as any rivalry in sports. Consider some numbers about these two teams....
To start with, they are separated by only 8 miles. Auburn and Alabama are near each other, but imagine 8 miles. That's close. UNC is #3 on the all-time wins list, with Duke at #4. UNC has won 5 titles, Duke 4 titles. Combined they have won 8 of the last 30. In the 51 years of the AP poll, one of these teams was the pre-season #1 15 times (nearly 1 of 3 polls). That includes 7 of the last 14 years.
As good as the ACC has been historically in basketball, these two have dominated. UNC has 28 regular season titles to Duke's 19 (that's first and second). That's 80% of all the ACC regular season titles. Duke has 19 ACC tournament titles to UNC's 17 (again, first and second).
UNC has 18 NCAA Final Fours (1st) and Duke has 15 (3rd). One of the two teams has played in 22 of the last 31 Final Fours.
For the last 149 straight meetings, at least one team was ranked in the Top 25.
69 times both teams have been ranked....Carolina leads 35-34 in those games.
42 times both teams have been ranked in the Top 10....the series is tied 21-21 in those games.
Just thought I'd throw some numbers out there. It's one of the all-time great rivalries, based on their proximity, but made relevant because of the incredible success of each program. And if you look at those records against each other when both teams are ranked and both are in the Top 10, you can see how even it has been.
PS. Interesting to see the wikipedia page about the rivalry says the following....."Much like the Alabama-Auburn football rivalry, the North Carolina-Duke rivalry is all the more intense because the two schools have consistently been among the nation's elite..."

Interesting. I like that last part too. It really is a great rivalry and I will be watching it tonight.
I will be watching it as I am Duke Fan!!!!!!!! Go Blue Devils!
82-80 one minute to go.
Holy Smokes, Rivers nails a three with no time left to win 85-84 after Carolina led by 10 or 12 almost the whole second half. The three gave Duke their only lead of the second half. Wow, what a game.
Hell of an ending. Duke just stole that one. So many things went wrong for North Carolina in the last 2 minutes, and literally everything and some more went right for Duke.. Austin Rivers, clutchness. Great game right there, glad I watched it.
