I recently was provided an opportunity to attend the Thursday round of the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island. This is located in the Charelston, SC area and we will be staying in downtown Charelston. My buddy and I would like to play a round or two of golf while we're there. Any suggestions?
Also any must-do's in Charleston? Thanks for any input!
As far as the golf is concerned, plenty to choose from depending on how much $ you want to spend. Midrange $ my favs are Charleston National, Legend Oaks, Shadowmoss, Crowfield, Rivertowne.
guided tour well worth the money. Unique home design/placement, gardens, etc. Loved how the people adapted even in those days to finding ways to keep from paying taxes. Also recommend tour of Magnolia Gardens, and Cypress Gardens was the site of much of Mel Gibson's The Patriot. Though not seafood, California Dreaming has the best prime rib in this country and my favorite seafood place was Gilligan's on James (or was it John's) Island. We've been gone for ten years but it was my favorite place to live.
Scot by blood, Southerner by Birth, Auburn Tiger by choice - War Eagle!
Thanks! I'll definitely check all those things out!
If you want BBQ there is a Jim and Nick's on King Street or Sticky Fingers on Meeting (both chains, Sticky Fingers local), Hanks for seafood and people watching (prob need a reservation) and can go casual tho you will see everything, Hymans always wins the People's Choice awards (on Meeting St) for fried seafood, Magnolia's for classic Charleston fare (shrimp and grits, etc), walk thru the Market (which was redone last year and actually has some areas air conditioned), SNOB for lunch on East Bay is good. If you have time take a carriage ride that you pick up in the Market area (usually the narrators are pretty good) or take the boat out to Ft Sumter - it will be hot but it is surprisingly a small spit of land in the middle of the channel for what it 'started' and a well-maintained national park fort. Five Guys is on King Street as well - don't know if you will have a car but all these places are within walking distance of downtown -
Bowens is great but can be hard to find - look up directions before you head out - several good seafood places over on Shem Creek just across the bridge from town as well....Have fun!
