Can a recruit be used as bulletin board material for Clemson? Haha.
I heard a radio host yesterday say that Auburn was doing great in recruiting but needs to do a better job against defections once they get to Auburn.
I try to see things as an outsider does but I dont think that was a fair statement. The player losses Auburn has had the last two years are typical of any program. Mostly career ending injuries or lack of future playing time.

Every school has defections and we have certainly had our share. We ought to remember that when we poke fun at other teams for losing players. Our problem is the high-profile cases. I'm not saying that any of them are related but we have had our share of those and that sticks in people's minds.

Defections are misleading and, frankly, a ridiculous measuring stick for a football program. Most players seem to have very good reasons for leaving, and, outside of those who are asked to leave, it doesn't seem like many of them leave because they don't like the program or because it is in bad shape. Like someone said earlier, they want more playing time or got into it and decided it was much harder/different than what they were expecting. On top of that, the last thing you want to do is convince a kid to stay who's heart isn't with the program. He will ultimately be unhappy, and chances are he isn't going to be playing as hard as he could if his heart was really in it.
Besides, it isn't like we have players giving up full scholarships to walk on for our most hated rival...

Look at it this way...teams wouldn't be able to sign 25 per year with a maximum of 85 scholarships if attrition wasn't expected. Do the math and that equates to about 4 per year on average, expected to be lost from a signing class.
Auburn hasn't lost enough apparently, since they will only be able to sign 20-21 this year.
One thing is for sure - I have learned a lot about college football and the structure of the rules by coming to this site on the reg!
