I've been listening, reading, and watching this flurry of crap in the local media about these two players and I've come to a conclusion:
People are right. Nick is a "dirty player". Cam did lie.
But we're missing the actual point. You don't become the Lombardi winner, a finalist for the Chuck Bednarik award, and a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski award by being sweet kind and wonderful.
Football is nasty, especially in the trenches. You have to play with a level of emotion and ferocity that can become consuming. The great ones always live on the edge of taking it too far - that is what makes them great.
He didn't injure anyone intentionally, but he was trying to hurt every man he went against, and every man he tackled. AND HE SHOULD BE. In the NFL we pay them millions to do it. But suddenly in college ball it's supposed to be "Buddy Ball" instead?
----------------------------------
Cam Newton lied. He lied about his laptop. He lied about some traffic tickets. He lied about probably a great deal of things. He may have even lied about knowing his Dad was in talks with Miss. St. about getting paid.
But that doesn't mean he condoned it. That doesn't mean it was his idea. We lie every day. We lie to our bosses, our friends, our pastors. We lie to cops when they pull us over, we lie to our kids when we don't want to tell them the truth.
It's a fact of life. Cam may have lied... wouldn't you? If your entire football career was in jeopardy based on a single fact that was completely up to whether you said "yes I knew" or "I had no idea"... would you suddenly develop this unshakable sense of virtue and "come clean".... ???
No. And neither would the countless hacks that are excoriating Cam in print, on the web, on the radio, or TV.
Cam, and his dad, are guilty. But all they are guilty of is being exposed. His dad has been exposed for being part of a long, rich, and ugly tradition in college football.
Cam has been exposed as being (*gasp*) human.
Thayer Evans lies when he writes stories, so does Pete Thamel. Nick Saban lied when he said he wasn't going to Alabama. Mark Ingram lied when he said he would be happy to see Cam win the Heisman. Urban Myer lied when he said he was quitting last year, but then he said he wasn't quitting... and he may be lying now.
--------------------------------------------------
Anyway, the point of this extremely long rant is simply this: Who cares? I don't care if EVERYONE IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL thinks Auburn is dirty. I don't care if they think Cam lied.
Whatever they have to tell themselves to sleep better at night and get over Auburn being National Champions is fine by me. Pat Dye said it best: "Nobody wants to see Auburn win except Auburn people and the players".
We won, it ain't going away. They can say all the words they want, but it doesn't change a thing.

Grammar: The difference between knowing your sh*t and knowing you're sh*t.

Nick Fairley is a dirty player, and Cam lied. Your point is?
