Need some vacation help...

  • The wife and I are trying to figure out where to go on vacation this spring or summer and we could use some advice or suggestions. This is going to be kind of our babymoon, if you will, because this might be our last chance for a munchkin free vacation. We would like to go somewhere in the lower 48 since flying out of the country is just a little more than we want to spend. We were thinking of someplace that we wouldn't really go to with kids, so the typical Orlando or gulf coast or smokey mountain trip is out. We're based out of Atlanta so airport access is not a problem. So what would be a fun trip? Any suggestions???

We've been on a cruise a couple years ago and while it was fun and all, we'd like to do or go someplace we haven't been before. But we may throw that option back on the table. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Kauai,
Its not the lower 48, but close, the lower 49.
You can fly direct to Honolulu from Atl. and hop a 45 min flight to Lihue.
Rates are fair, and they now have a number of Resorts.
Kauai is similar to the South in that the people are friendly, and it has an-out-in-the country atmosphere....but..... the SCENARY is second to none!

  • One of my favorite recent trips a few years ago was to Boston and Nancucket.

Boston is a great town and has a unique feel compared to other big cities. It has great history, great shopping, and excellent restaurants. You can check out Cheers, Newbury Street (shopping and lunch), Beacon Hill, and walk Freedom Trail, which starts in Boston Common and takes you by Fanuiel Hall, Quincy Market, etc.

Definitely take the Duck Tour as well (see link). They use WWII amphibious landing vehicles to take you all over the city, on streets and through the water. It's a great way to see everything and learn a lot about the city. Very cool whether you like history or not. They'll explain how Paul Revere didn't ride down the street yelling "the British are coming", as almost everyone listening was British.

Then take in a game at Fenway. And that's not just for you, it's cool for the wife too because it's just such a neat place. The whole neighborhood down there at game time is cool. Go at night.

It's worth the train ride over to Cambridge too to check our Harvard Square and that whole area.

Then rent a car and drive out to Cape Cod and catch a ferry from Hyannis Port out to Nantucket (see link and pictures). It's a tiny island with only about 10,000 actual residents, but it's really cool. When you get there you can rent a couple mo-peds and cruise the whole island. Great little town with good restaurants, good shopping. There's a little brewery out there in the country a little. The beaches aren't world class of course, but good enough to enjoy for a day while you're there.

Anyway, it's a good trip to take without kids because it involves being on the move a lot and taking in everything around you. It's as much an experience as a destination, which I've always thought makes the best trips.

  • It depends what you like to do. I'm not a Vegas guy, I like more history or nature
    Here are my faves:

    1. Boston & Maine- American history, Fenway, Acadia NP and rocky coastline
    2. Colorado-Mountains and beer
    3. Chicago- great architecture, Wrigley, great food
    4. Arizona- Desert, Grand Canyon

  • Depends on what you are looking for. Beach, Outdoors, Tropical, City Life??

Beach - I would suggest Key West (beach, beach bars, scuba (personal fav), fishing)
Outdoors - I would suggest Colorado or Jackson, WY (even in the summer time there are plenty of outdoor adventures to do (fishing, hiking, rock climbing, etc.)
Tropical - Mexico and Puerto Rico are cheap to get to (Mexico probably has the cheapest all inclusive resorts; I stayed in Cozumel for 6 nights all inclusive for $978/person and a flight was only about $400. Flights to Cozumel are cheaper through American Airlines which mean Birmingham). Puerto Rico is easy because there is no need for passport.
City Life - Vegas is really cheap to go to. Or go out west. San Diego or San Fran are really cool places

If you could swing the cost I would suggest St. Lucia as the ultimate vaca. You could probably make it work for 6 nights and be around 1500/person
