Since everything else is covered, I'll give you both a little bit of advice. Don't use detergents to wash your hunting clothes and don't wear cologne at all during the week prior to your trips out. Find young, green sassafras and dig it up. Cut the roots off and chop them up. Boil them in water, the more concentrated, the better. Spray this on your hunting clothes and especially on the palms of your gloves. Spray it randomly as you walk down your trail to your stand and at the foot of your stand. This stuff acts as a cover/attractant. Deer love sassafras. You're welcome.

.223 or .243 is probably gonna be your best bet if he has been around guns a fair amount, but iron sights only. You start him with a scope and he will never learn how to shoot really well. If he is new to guns, I might suggest a .410 to 20 gauge shotgun with buckshot as the aiming portion of the event is less demanding as you would imagine(get recoil pad if going with shotgun so the kick isn't as bad).

If you don't have a hunters safety course license then now would be a great time to do it. You can do it with him. They mainly teach gun safety so everyone can start with good habits. They do not teach how to hunt. The hunters safety course is required to obtain a license. Even if it wasn't, it is a good thing to take part in.

Hunting advice....??? If I told you that it wouldn't be near as much fun as figuring it out together. Start out going with people who know what they are doing. Might want to go with kids his own age. Don't be to serious initially. If he is tired leave. Conditions brutal? Maybe next time. It's supposed to be fun so treat it that way. Everything else takes care of itself.
