NCAA closes loophole that allowed Cam Newton to play

  • NCAA closes loophole that allowed Cam Newton to play – USATODAY.com

The measure expands its definition of an agent to encompass third-party influences who directly or indirectly market an athlete for profit.

  • Quack. Wonder about the Lache loophole where UO actually admitted paying 25,000 for him.
If your duck name means you came here from your side of the pond to post this, I'm glad it's been on your mind.

If its just a coincidence and you went to AU, WDE and wasn't it great we beat UO last year?! For laid back Oregonians they sure were poor sports.

  • The supposedly loophole closure still doesn't seem to remedy what some think the Cam problem was. Cam had no knowledge of these activities. The new rule doesn't seem to address this. And even if it did, what is to stop anyone from claiming to be an agent and jeopardizing the athlete's eligibility? What if I went to an Alabama booster and said "Give me $50,000 to ensure that X recruit signs his papers?". Even though I don't know him and he doesn't know, I am having these conversations, under some of the proposed rules, it would seem that I could endanger the player's eligibility. Even if it isn't someone who is completely unknown by the player, what if it is a distant uncle or an estranged father? It would seem that if you are going to rule one ineligible because of a third-party agent, that agent would have to have been invested with authority by the player... How can someone be considered an agent if he or she doesn't have any sway in the process...

  • It won't fly. The first 5* who is declared ineligible because their HSHC, Ma, Pa, Uncle, Auntie, Bro, Sister, or Homeboy had a hand out for the 5*'s services, then the NCAA will be in some serious crap. Quick Pro Quo is very difficult to prove.
I guess providing a girlfriend a scholarship to influence a football recruit now makes the recruit ineligible too. It isn’t happening.

Punish the schools that offer extra benefits and lobby the US Government to make a law that punishes people who solicit a recruits services.

As the rule is written now, we only need a third party to claim he recieved cash from a X booster to influence TJ to come on-line. Oh sorry TJ, you can't play because long lost Uncle Joe took money on your behalf. Dumbest thing I ever heard.

And, they just opened up a can of worms.......because now all any opposing school has to do if they don't like the superstar player for their rival is roll out some "3rd party" who has some sort (any sort) of connection to the student-athlete and have them "claim" that they marketed said student athlete for money. Any rich booster for an opposing school will now be able to approach some low-life cousin or uncle or whomever has a familial connection (or not) to said student-athlete and pay them a large some of money to "come out" during said student-athletes successful season and "blow the lid off" by claiming to have marketed them. Unfreakingbelievable.........

    Agreed. It's a short-sighted and terrible rule.

  • How can you punish a player for something someone else does without his knowledge? It's like giving someone else a speeding ticket because I was driving too fast on the way to pick them up. This will blow up in the NCAA's face.
