My comments to today's B'ham News Sound off. What'cha think?

  • Quit with the Saban apologies. It only makes the Updyke Nation look worse. Yes he was within the rules, but if you offer a kid in September then you must follow thru with the offer if he verbally commits. It is easy for someone like Saban to throw a wide net and cull the worst of the catch. If Saban was really a good recruiter, then he should be made (as should all SEC coaches) to work within a reasonable set of ethical rules. Right now, there are none.

I believe every offer should be filed with the SEC office and should be limited to 25 firm and 10 contingent offers. Also, every potential student athlete should be able to hold only 5 committable offers (monitor by the NCAA). They can shuffle schools in and out of the 5 offers at any time, but the school gets the offer back to use elsewhere. This will eliminate the acts of the TJ Yeldons of the world. Student athletes should not be used as weapons against rival schools in recruiting. They are recruited to play football and not to screw another school's recruiting effort.

I can't agree with you on the amount of firm offers...that is incredibly low. Schools could never fill a recruiting class doing it that way. However, I do think that there should be an early signing period...that would solve most of these problems.

Ultimately, Saban's tactics will backfire on him and good kids who care about right and wrong will not want to play for a guy who doesn't give a crap about players.

  • I think if a kid commits he should be able to sign the loi right then. He would have an option to drop his commitment before a given date if there is changes on the coaching staff, NCAA problems or other hardship matters. That would stop alot of the problems we have in recruiting.

I have never understood the push for an early signing period. Seems this would just move the problem from Feb to Dec or Sep.
I am not sure you can legislate ethics especially when it comes to millions of dollars to coaches and schools. Big coaching salaries and ESPN make athletics overshadow academics.

  • Saban is the worst kind of liar. He simply expects everyone to believe anything that falls out of his mouth and has no need to ever apologize for anything he says or does.

Anything he says simply means this: this is supposed to work for ME. If it does, it's right. If it doesn't? It's wrong.

    Period. Dot.
