Most Super Bowl appearances?

  • Lately I've been wondering who has the most Super Bowl appearances for a couple of reasons: 1) The previous Tom Brady talk up until last weekend--could've set the record for most appearances AS A QB (he's tied at 5 with Elway), and 2) I have an acquaintance who has been in a lot--Pete Metzelaars-- and I was curious if anyone had been a part of more Super Bowls. My question pertains to total SB appearances, i.e., as a player and/or a coach. Pete has been in 6 SBs, 4 as a player with the Bills, and two as a coach with the Colts. The only players who have been in 6 SBs are Don Beebe, 4 with the Bills, 2 with the Packers, and Mike Lodish, 4 with the Bills, 2 with the Broncos. The only other person I can find with as many as 6 appearances is Don Shula. He had 1 with the Baltimore Colts and 5 with the Dolphins, all as a coach. Shula won the '64 NFL Championship but that was two years before the the first Super Bowl, so it is retroactively more like a conference championship and still not an SB at any rate.

The second part and Auburn angle on this question is which former AU player has the most SB appearances? I may be missing a lot somewhere in this, but the most I can think of for any former Auburn player is 2 SBs. Kevin Greene had one with the Steelers as a player and one with the Packers as a coach. Maybe there is someone from the sixties or seventies that was in more but before my time.

I would think Steve Wallace had more than two with 49ers.

  • I think Dan Reeves has the most total SB appearances at 8 or 9; he was in the SB 4 or 5 times as a player and asst coach with Dallas, and 4 times as a head coach (3 w/Denver and 1 w/Atlanta). I think LB Charles Haley has the most SB victories with five. As for AU players, I think OL Steve Wallace won 3 rings with SF. Tommie Agee won at least 2 SB rings with Dallas. I don't know how much of a claim we have on him since he didn't finish his college career at AU, but I think Brandon Jacobs won 2 rings with the Giants. I'm sure there are numerous other AU alums with rings, these are just the ones I remembered off the top of my head.

Not on this topic. I couldn't find any one source with definitive answers. What I came up with was piece meal, that's why I brought it up here.

Correct about Wallace with three rings. A little before my days of keeping up closely with the NFL, and most lineman fly under the radar. So Wallace has the most we can think of so far...
