Mora and his record as an NFL HC... not good.

  • Somebody I respect greatly asked me why would the search committee consider Mora with his losing record as an NFL HC.

For one answer, I really think the committee is covering all bases and not have it happen like last time when Chizik was hired. I only know of two real interviews by JJ before he hired Chiz. It really appeared his mind was made up before he even 'searched.'

Now, remember when judging NFL coaches for college coaching jobs… Nick Saban was 9-7 in his first year with the Dolphins, but he didn't make the playoffs. And then he was 6-10 his 2nd and last year with the Dolphins. He failed to take them to the playoffs either year! And, he also passed over Drew Brees in the draft!!! What? He didn't think Drew Brees was a franchise QB?!? Well, the Saints sure did. And we all know he is!

But, somehow or other, Saban has been successful as a college HC... and not just at UAT.

So, don't judge Mora totally on his HC job in the NFL. But, he sure turned UCLA around this year.

His stock really went up yesterday for some reason… possibly because he contacted the committee. But, don't know if he will formally interview or not.

So far, if Phillip and Ron are getting credible inside tips, Smart and Malzahn have interviewed. Also, they, for some reason, have said that Petrino will be the last to interview… and so far he has not interviewed. Is that because they really don't want him, or... are they trying to see if anybody stacks up with Petrino as a potential big winner at AU. I don't know about Mora or Petrino (did I spell his name right?)... but I'm sure some of you do.

  • Brees was traded to Saints not drafted by them. I think he passed on trading for Brees not drafting him.

Relating NFL HC record to potential college success is not a reliable system for analysis in my opinion. The reason is pretty simple in my mind, the NFL is a much more difficult place to win than college. A reasonable NFL coach would be a much better coach in college. If Auburn hired Jim Mora, I would welcome it with great expectation.

  • ACtually, in spite of my better judgement in defending Saban, he actually wanted to draft Brees, and the GM's decision not to is what caused the rift and Saban's eventual departure from the Dolphins.

Not that it matters, but Brees was drafted in '01 by the Chargers. Saban took over for Dolphin in '05 I think. I'm not sure what y'all are talking about.

Not possible . BRees was already in San Deigo when Satan was at Miami. As stated above. He passed on trading for him not drafting him. Still not a great idea on his part. But not a draft issue a trade issue.

You are correct... Miami passed on Brees when they could possibly have had him in 2006.

    Here's Wikipedia info...

After the Chargers refused to increase their offer, Brees met with other teams. The New Orleans Saints and the Miami Dolphins were interested. New Orleans made an offer that included $10 million in guaranteed money the first year and a $12 million option the second year. Miami was unsure if Brees' shoulder was completely healed and doctors suggested the team not sign him because of the injury.[18] The Dolphins ended negotiations and traded for Minnesota Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper instead. Brees signed a 6-year, $60 million deal with the Saints on March 14, 2006.

    Thanks!
