Moment You First Loved Auburn and Why...

  • In the spring of 1956, Randy Richardson moved to my little town of Marion and proceeded to take all my fifth grade girlfriends away from me without even trying. In spite of this, he was a gamer, as much into sports as me, and we became good friends. But then in November of 1957, he asked me one morning who I was for in the big game - Alabama or Auburn. At that point I didn't even know what a college was, much less that they played football in such places. When he said he was for Alabama, I immediately knew that I had to be for Auburn! Well, if you are reading this thread, then you probably know what happened next: I found myself a radio and listened to the game in total delight as Auburn decimated the Tide 40-0, capturing the national championship (shared with Ohio State). Since that momentous occasion, I have been an EXTREME Auburn fan, listening to or watching almost every game since that date. I spent the best four years of my life at Auburn where I met and then married my Auburn sweetheart. Our kids went to Auburn, even though we were living in Illinois when they graduated from high school. So... Thank you, Randy, wherever you are! Along with my parents, my pastor and my Army drill Sergeant, you, Randy Richardson, are without a doubt one of the most influential people of my life! (I have more Auburn stories, but will save them for another thread). NEXT...?

  • I was born an AU fan... but I didn't realize how serious everything was until 1989. I was 9 years old and at Jordan Hare stadium for the 1st Iron Bowl at Auburn. It was a memory I'll never forget. The first play of the game was a simple out route pass. I remember seeing that play, and my mom stood up and said "SH*T!" right when Slack dropped back to pass. That was the first time I ever heard my mom cuss. I knew then what it was all about. Later that day I was on my uncle's shoulders at Toomer's Corner and got hit in the face with a massive wad of toilet paper. I loved it. Will never forget that day.

  • I grew up in an Alabama home. I met my future husband in 1986 and when I introduced him to my family the first question was "Alabama or Auburn?" He proudly said Auburn. He took me to my very first college football game to see Auburn play Georgia Tech. We had a picnic lunch on the grounds of the president's home and my future sister-n-law was stung by a bee (which was very painful but she still went to the game). I can still remember walking into the stadium and feeling the electricity in the air and completely falling in love with Auburn that day. All the fans were screaming and the stadium felt like it was moving. Our tickets were actually on the first row and we probably saw about ten plays. It was a great day and one I will never forget.

  • I can't recall the very first moment I became an Auburn fan, but I know the year - 1960! Last year I was going through a box of my old school items (my mom saved EVERYTHING from my youth), and in there was a spiral bound notebook from junior high school. On the back of the notebook, I had created a crossword puzzle made up entirely of college names, and the first name across the middle was AUBURN, and it was also the largest!

My story of how I got to Auburn (it was a difficult path), is a long but interesting one, so I'll save it for another thread. But finally, in September of 1964, I walked onto the Auburn campus for the first time (that's right, I picked Auburn site unseen) to enroll. The interesting part is I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, and had no connections to AU whatsoever. But I can say it was certainly one of the best decisions I ever made in my life!!!

  • Growing up in Jacksonville FL, I really didn't know where Auburn was. After High School, I was interested in studying engineering but I did not want to stay in FL. I didn't want to get too far away from home so I knew exactly where I wanted to go... Georgia Tech. I applied and was accepted to GT. My father (a Gator fan) didn't mind me going to Tech but wanted me to choose Tech over somewhere else, not because Tech was the only place I ever looked. My HS Guidance Counselor suggested Auburn as another option. I agreed to visit Auburn just to satisfy my Dad. I had known that Tech was in the Atlanta area but did not realize it was in DOWNTOWN Atlanta. I was very dissappointed with my visit. However, when I got to Auburn, I just fell in love with the place. Everyone was so friendly and I loved living in a relatively small town. I loved the next 4 years. Since then, I have a sister and daughter who graduated from AU and a son who will next August.

  • As bad as I hate to admit it I was an Alabama fan for the first 7 years of my life because I just didn't know any better. I use the excuse I was young and dumb lol. But when I saw that man wearing that number 34 jersey running the football I knew there was something special about Auburn. That was all it took for me to know exactly which school I loved in my heart. My whole family are Alabama fans with me being the only auburn fan. I have had years where I have caught hell at family gatherings but I am a die hard auburn fan through and through.

  • Been an Auburn fan since the days of Spence McCrackin, and Jimmy and Danny Speigner blocking for Pat Sullivan, who happened to be a not too shabby quarterback. My earliest memories were sitting in the end zone with dad and him saying, "Watch Jimmy and Danny open wide the hole for the running back." A big War Eagle to the unknown brutes who made others famous!

  • 2 on 1 backyard football in 1958. I wore the orange and blue of Auburn against my cousins who wore the crimson of Bama. I usually got beat, but I got my licks in. Joined the military, but moved to Auburn after retirement so my kids could attend Auburn. Both are grads, one is in the Navy, and one is at Arkansas State working for CGM. I'm proud and I believe in Auburn always.

This is definitely a small world when I see someone post something about marion alabama. Just who is this behind the screen name. If you still live in marion and don't have to do much posting for you to figure me out and know the extremes I go to for Auburn Football.

  • I grew up in LaGrange, Georgia, just 45 miles away from Auburn. As a kid, my older sister moved to Athens as her husband went to UGA, so we made many trips up there in the late 60's. My brother was also a Georgia fan and we had a cousin that played for UGA as well. My Dad had always been a Tech fan, but in 1970, the son of one of his customers who was a student at Auburn gave him 2 tickets to the AU/UGA game in Auburn. My Dad couldn't go to the game, so my Mother took me down, and at 11, I saw my first game, and was hooked from that point on, even though Georgia upset us that day.

I remember the crowd and Haley Center(which was brand new). I still have the program from that day. Oddly, I remember reading that Cliff Hare Stadium's first section was built in 1939, and thought about how long ago that had been (31 Years!). Nine years later, as a senior, I was there to see the first upper deck open in 1980 (now 32 years ago), so 31 years doesn't seem all that long ago.

I live in Colorado now, and don't make it back for games very much, but thanks to the internet and DirecTV, I don't miss a game. Both my boys are Auburn fans, as are my grandkids, and every time we visit, even if it's not a game season, we make the trip over. Still feels like home.

  • When my dad brought me a ball cap and t-shirt back to Kingston Ontario in the early 80s. When I went to my first game in 1994 (Kentucky). I really realized my love last year when I was driving back to Atlanta, I stopped on the road before I left, and just looked back. Really looking forward to going back.
