In fact, I'm sure defensive assistants were a topic of discussion during his initial interview and subsequent acceptance call. Perhaps he provided a list of his top choices to Gus, the ultimate decision-maker and lead conductor of staff interviews.

You're initial post insinuated that because Ellis had not yet arrived, no defensive coaches would be hired. I was simply pointing out that Ellis doesn't necessarily need to be present during the interview. The tone of your post suggested an unfavorable outcome; hence, the reason for my assertion that you were being pessimistic.
