  • As I have said before and got blasted for it, 1.3 million is a ridiculous salary for any assistant, much less one who rode on the coattails of a once in a lifetime talent like Cam. I am not saying he did not deserve a raise after last year. I am only saying we gave him a deal that was fueled by the fear of losing him and now we are in all likelihood stuck with him because no one really wants him.

I believe he is a fine man and all of those things but he is massively over compensated and has yet to prove anything as an OC at the SEC level without an all world QB like Cam. JMHO!

  • Considering his body of work at Tulsa, Arkansas and Auburn, I am pretty happy to be 'stuck' with him if that us the case.

How, exactly, do you ride the coattails of someone you recruited and coached? Holy revisionist history, Batman.

Johnny Heisman himself couldn't have coached up a better offense with such a young and inexperienced line.

  • CGM utilized Cam in excellent fashion. As mentioned by others, he got it done at Tulsa for two years. His focus needs to get Frazier ready for Chick-fil-A and for next spring.

Probably a little truth to the Cam thing, but I'm sure Gus could get an OC job at any major school in the nation. I don't know about 1.3 million, but I bet there's lots of folks that would like to have him. That being said, I think the salary is crazy. Then again, I think all these coaches salaries are out of control.............

  • I'm ecstatic that Malzahn might be staying put. So what if he had a down year...he is a top notch OC and has proven it at least 5 out of 6 years.

Malzahn approves of NOW Boot Camp! Well...not really...but he would if he knew about it :) www.nowbootcamp.com.

  • First, Auburn does not play the level of competition that they do at Tulsa on a regular basis. When we do play those kind of teams, we put up good numbers. But when you look at SEC games without Cam, our offense is pretty weak. We only scored 1 offensive touchdown against Kentucky in 09 and we were throttled by LSU and others. We hung in with Bama that year due to trick plays and a defense that played it's best game until late.

We don't need an OC that rules the roost against the Tulsa's of the world!

  • Modern salaries for coaches are over the top, no doubt... but to sit here and pine about what CGM brings home is like being upset about gravity working. It is what it is. If you dont like it, dont support it by not watching the games or attending them. It's the cost of doing business at the top level of Division 1 football.

As for Gus being over compensated... his body of work speaks for itself. His offense works. ANY offense works if you can execute it at a high level. See Georgia Tech. See Boise State.

There were a lot of things that held this offense back and kept it from working at the high level we are used to.

    1. Losing Cooper. I dont think that we can put a value on how much we missed his leadership and experience when we lost him for the year. Our O Line absolutely never recovered.
    2. Having Blake and Reed injured during the middle part of the year put our offense into neutral. Changing QB's in the middle of the season kept it there. With Cooper and healthy WR's and Trotter at the keys, our offense resembled itself. Without those three players, not so much.
    3. Our Offensive and Defensive issues on third down. Because we played with no confidence, we had more and more trouble getting off the field on Defense and staying on the field on Offense.

I dont think that the 'quality' of the coaches is an issue here. I think they know their stuff... my ONLY question is chemistry on the staff. If there is dischord between coaches, personally or philosophically, then somebody probably needs to fix that immediately. That's Chizik's job to know who is addition by subtraction. Change, just to change, is a stupid idea and never fixes anything.

I agree its time for him to get KF ready for Atlanta.
