Defeat doesn't finish a man - quit does. A man is not finished when he's defeated. He's finished when he quits. - Richard Nixon
Ron - If he were to take the job at Tulsa would he leave prior to the NC game (if we win this weekend) ?
I would think he'd coach the NC game. But, every coach does things differently.
For whatever it is worth, I believe Malzahn will return to Auburn next year.
Ron is certainly more connected in coaching circles, but I strongly believe that the compansation pacjage he will be offered at the end of the year coupled with several other additional factors means he will be back.
I get the feeling Gus will be back in Auburn for one or two more years. Next year is going to be REALLY tough. We will have a very young team and the schedule is pretty brutal.
If Newton bolts for the NFL then Gus will have still never coached the same QB two years in a row.
I think CGM knows the value of his stock on the market. I believe AU will pay him well and we know it's not just about $$$. If I'm not mistaken he and CGC appear to have a great relationship. For that matter, he needs to look no further than CGC to see that being selective in choosing the right fit is very important. Some have said if CGC had stayed at UT one more year he would have been the most sought after coach in the country. He did AU a great favor in going to ISU. While Tulsa may be a better opportunity than ISU, is it that much better?
I tend to... no wait... i always listen to Ron. I know he has said that he means no disrespect in rebutting your comments but I believe some comments have been disrespectul to Ron.
Gus is a family man in all that "family" represents. His family is said to be happy in Auburn and Auburn is endeared with the Malzahn family in return. Gus has a great thing going at present and he has made a real name for himself in the past four years without a doubt. He will be the HC of a major football program within the next ten years and if things continue as the recent history indicates, a mid tier stepping stone will not be necessary for Gus to leap to the top of the pile.
One thing for all of us to remember is that it can be lonely at the top. Smiling faces are often disguises for frustration and hidden emotions, so don't proclaim things like "he will never take that job", because quite frankly no body knows the real situation other than Gus. His wife will know when he himself knows. Why did Satan, Spurrier, Petrino, Hotlz, and many other prime time college coaches leap to the NFL at one time or another? To chase their personal dreams and because their egos told them it was their time. Some were right and many more were simply wrong.
I could write much more, but I would become a bore, so enjoy your evening and look forward to Saturday afternoon when we get to cheer for our AUBURN Tigers to take the SEC Championship and place the 2010 trophy in the case where it rightfully belongs. War Eagle!! and to all a good night.
