Well you tell me what's positive. We hired a guy whose recruits were subpar at best. Cody Burns at QB please, Zeke Pike never made it through summer -DUI, Cam Newton - no explanation needed, Micheal Dyer - pot head that followed him to Ar State and got booted there. So this is what I should support.

this honestly doesnt even garner a reply. If you want to be honest with yourself, ask yourself the question again and you will come up with a ton of positives, that is if you have a brain or watched AU football between say 2009 - 2010.
i hope i was able to answer some of your questions.

  • Gus is a great hire. He has done things that none of the "big splash" candidates have ever done. He has ..lined off the football field, washed practice and game uniforms, coached both sides of the ball, been to multitudes of clinics listening to hotshot college assistants to better be able to coach both sides of the ball. He has spent long hours watching film. He has dealt with college recruiters in a way that should make him a great recruiter. As a HS coach at the highest classification he has had to be knowledgeable of all phases of the game. I remember way Saban said about nearly getting beat his first time to face Gus' offense. He called it a "s**t storm" and that was without the talent level we have today. Well Nick the "s**t storm " returneth!

  • Nay sayers use common sense. Petrino had more baggage than we know. Removed 6 months from obvious sexual addiction problem with likely more that we don't know about. Petrino has a history of instability with programs. I can assure you sexual addiction is a difficult matter requiring a lot of ongoing accountability and prone to relapses. As bad as drugs.

Jimbo had too good of a deal to leave FSU and lot of folks didn't want him.

That left us with hiring one of two coordinators--an offensive or defensive guru. Those are only folks wanting job--here or elsewhere. We get the OC--as PM said none of above 4 bad coaches. All would bring discipline--read dont worry about Gus.

Positives: he knows lot of recruits. I'll bet he keeps J Johnson QB prospect + other offensive skill guys. Suspect he will keep some of our best recruiters--TT, CL?, Thig? They all know the defensive recruits we have. Gus will hopefully find a great DC--a crucial hire yes.

Gus has tremendous upside--very possibly an offensive genius who can continue it here again. He needs one dual threat QB to give us a great offense. OL great potential. He will not keep Grimes I imagine.

Trust PM insights. We did fine. For those who are pouting think about it. Auburn's strength has always been unity. If we can come together around Chizik do we think Gus is not way ahead of the curve early.

  • Not my first choice because of all the discipline issues. I'm wondering who the holdovers will be from the existing staff? They better have a heck of a defensive genius in mind to get this defense turned around. Let's pay Kirby 4 million to come coach the defense.

  • Trust PM--any of 4 major candidates would be good hires.

  • AUNick1, At least get your argument straight. Kodi Burns was recruited by and played for Tuberville, before Chizik and Malzahn. And Zeke Pike was a public intox, not DUI, which took place AFTER Malzahn was gone.

  • Well put. Lot of these negative jackwagons forget that Malzahn drives Saban and Smart ' absolutely nuts'.

  • The best hire Chizik ever made was Gus Malzahn. Gus may or may not have been our best option this go around, but he was surely the best hire Chizik made when he was hiring his staff. I would not dare sell Gus short.

I must have missed that one.. When was this? We had Cam Newton in 2010 and puttered around like we were playing in molasses. I guess that was Gene's meddling. I hope you are right. Alabama did have trouble with Texas A & M but most of that was Manziel.

i agree with this and his hire was the only thing that kept me from jumping off a bridge when Chiz was hired. However this makes mu stomach hurt. What will happen to our defense? We need grit and blood in a bad way. he better do with the defense what chiz did with the offense when he hired Gus.

I'm sorry, but it was CAM who got us that crystal football. We didn't win it the year before with C. Todd did we? When we got to the meat of the schedule that year we lose 5 out of 7. Maybe with all this re-alignment we can move to the SunBelt.

A couple of months ago there were quite a few on this site attributing the NC to Cam and Gus. Now that Gus is our coach, he no longer gets any credit for the NC? If you had to go back and pick one greatest thing that happened to the AU football program in the past 10 years it would have to be getting CGM as the OC in '09. How he'll pan out as our HC, nobody knows, but I'll support him and I'm really excited about him bringing his offense back to AU. He is smart, innovative, a workaholic and fairly young. Picking a HC is a crap shoot but I think there is a great chance he will have tremendous success at AU and we won't want to lose him again. JMO

  • Auburn needs the reincarnation of Vince Lombardi , Erk Russell, and Bear Bryant mixed in one to coach the defense.....wait that's who we needed as head coach.....well whomever the DC is needs some of those characteristics....I thought Van Gorder fit that bill but they still played like a bunch of pu$$ies ......could Chiz have been screwing with the defense too much as well?
