Making our beds

  • I'm about to step on some toes, but it's a topic that I think it worth mentioning.

    I know a lot of us find great joy when a Bama fan, any Bama fan, does something stupid and/or illegal. (See Updyke, and the teabagger as recent examples). I would caution us to take care in what we choose to focus on, as it sets a standard. If we set the standard that whenever ONE idiot does something bad, it colors the whole fanbase and University, we are making our own beds.

    When one of our own does something bad, which they have and will, we cannot then say "it's one bad apple" without wearing the hypocrisy mantle. We have literally millions of fans. Some of them are idiots, and will do something embarrassing. It's just the way it is.

    I'd prefer that we focus on our football team, and not the fringe nut jobs out there. That's what the Finebaums's et al are for. I'd prefer that we act with a bit more class.

    Thus, I cringe when our fans constantly harp on Updykes and Teabaggers. We are making a bed that we will one day have to lay in.

    Just my opinion, so flame away.

  • The difference is that we do not embrace the idiots in our own fan base when they do something reprehensible. If we had our own Updyke situation, we would not be getting their autograph and posing with them for pictures. Also, the teabag incident was idiotic and the guy should go to jail, but the mob of bama fans around him cheering him on is why it looks so bad for them. They have shown a trend lately of embracing this type of behavior.

    There is a difference between the two fan bases.

  • I agree with your sentiments when it is isolated, BUT the Updyke fan club is a large one... The love that many Bammer fans give to this guy is sickening. So it is not an isolated case or a single representative of the Tide Nation. They love what he did and a large percentage of the fan base can be judged by their reaction to Updyke and his evil deeds.

    I feel sorry for the Downing Family and him. He has lost his job, his reputation. He turned himself in and appears to be remorseful. I will NOT criticize the entire fan base due to his actions. He may be a convicted felon soon.

    Remember, there is more than Updyke that attacks Auburn, you have soooter moore (the tapes), you have W&L the attorney in MGM (The bogus email which included FBI, ATM Cards, rigged Slots,etc.) that took on a life of its own. There are other examples.

    Do you honestly think that we are opening ourselves up to their generalizations because we may be guilty of generalizing them? really? It does not matter what we say or do. They will always be bama. They will always tear us down. And do you know why? Because they dont understand us. They can not imagine being prideful of a school. Not just a football team. I dont think it makes one bit of difference what we say or do in regards to their idiot fans.

    And as far as that goes, I dont really give a rats a** what they say about us. It has no bearing on my opinion of our program.

    1. Posting this here is completely pointless. As long as bama fans continue to make fools of themselves, AU fans will sit back and laugh at their joke of a fan base. That's just the way it is.

    2. This is college football, not a church social, trash talk and enjoying your rival's failures is just part of it.
