I'm not going to do a full story on each game but will have a notebook later tonight after 5A game. Here's a quick recap of the 3A game...
Thursday was redemption for Kerryon Johnson and his Madison Academy teammates.
Johnson, a talented sophomore running back and safety, was part of a devastating 20-14 loss to Handley in last year’s 3A title game played at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
A year later, Johnson was in Jordan-Hare Stadium where he led the Mustangs to a 31-7 win over Fayette County and the 2012 Class 3A state championship.
“It’s unbelievable,” Johnson said. “After last year, losing like that, we pushed ourselves harder than ever. It just shows how hard work pays off.
“I’m still in shock. I can barely believe it. I’m just so excited.”
Johnson, 6-foot and 185 pounds, was pretty unbelievable on the field. He rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries and also had two pass breakups and two interceptions, one of which he returned 68 yards for a touchdown to earn MVP honors.
He already projects as one of the state of Alabama’s top prospects in the 2015 class with early interest from a number of schools including Auburn, Alabama, Florida State and South Carolina.
Johnson was born in Tallahassee, Fla., and grew up a Florida State fan.
