Looking beyond the hype. What about number five?

  • Improved format? I would say not necessarily... in looking beyond the hype. The including of four teams in a playoff does indeed build drama and intrigue in determining a National Champion...yet it does not solve the problem of being subjective in making sure you get the right four teams in the playoff. In the new format, the number five team will be the new number three team left out. I can envision just as much backlash from five as three in the old system. Imagine five one loss teams at the top. (which is very likely) Or four one loss teams and one undefeated. (just as likely) Who gets left out? The only system that would be totally fair is to place everyone in a conference and let all conference champions play in the playoff. Looking beyond the hype...I see no improvement. The making of more money is the only real change...poor number five!

  • I agree - instead of poor #3 (AU in 2004) now it will be poor #5.....

I have been saying the exact same thing, conference champions only. This voting at-large stuff rarely if ever benefits AU. Can't argue with conference champs and don't need no freaking poll - WDE

If you look through the entire history of the BCS, I don't think you can find a #5 or even a #4 team that deserved to be in the BCS Championship Game. I dare say that if it had been four teams all along, the BCS would still be the standard and would be wildly successful and popular with fans. The BCS method wasn't bad after the 2003 correction. Limiting it to two teams led to its demise. The problem was there was too often a #3 team that would have been a legitimate challenge to #1 and #2. (USC ('03), Auburn ('04), Oklahoma State ('10), etc.) I can't remember a #4 or #5 that really needed to be there. Number four will be the annual "freebie" while number five will be a distant memory. Historically, #4 and #5 have not been contenders. This new setup really addresses the #3 team and that's all that has been historically needed.

The NCAA puts 68 teams into the BB tournament and ESPN spends a full half-hour discussing bubble teams and who got left out.
