Let Me Tell You About Gene Chizik

  • As some of you may know my father passed away about three weeks ago. I had posted about a month ago his dire condition from a stroke and that he probably wasn't going to make it. In that post I also said that he was the biggest AU fan I've ever seen. He joined the old Greater Auburn Fund (GAF) in about 1958 and was a scholarship donor since the program started in 1983. He was from Brent, AL and the president of the Bibb County (AL) Auburn Club for many years. For those who don't know, Brent is about 25 miles from uat. So being an Auburn man in those parts, especially during the 60's and 70's, took a special effort along with a lot of grief. My dad was especially proud of the 2010 BSCNC and I put the cap that he wore (AU BCSNC) in his casket so it would always be with him. Dad knew Coach Jordan, Pat Dye, and Tubs pretty well and went on serveral bird (Quail) hunting trips with all of them. He only met CGC once and had his photo made so he didn't have the bond with Chiz as he did with some of the prior coaches. He justed wasn't given the time.

With all that said, my mother received a letter from Coach Chizik dated January 19th. Without going into too much detail about what he said I can assure you that it was a moving and heartfelt letter. He had heard about dad's death from some people in the AD and took the time to ask around and find out some things about this "Auburn Man". He mentioned those things in his letter. He closed the letter by saying "I appreciate all he did for Auburn, and I encourage you to lean on your faith, family and friends as you continue to morn. God Bless and War Eagle" You can imagine how much this letter meant to an 87 year old widow who just lost her husband. I'm not sure but I don't know of many, if any, coaches in the SEC that would have taken the time to write this letter especially in the middle of recruiting season. I had the utmost respect for Chiz as a person prior to his sending this letter but it just went up to an unprecedented level. I don't know what his record, future, or legacy will be at AU but I can assure everyone we could not have a finer person leading our program.

Photos of my dad at an AU game back during the 60's. Get the polyester pants with no belt and the old Auburn cowboys hats in the background. Vintage 60's. Just about eveyone wore coats and ties to football games.

  • Ed, thanks for sharing! Your post is both a great tribute to Chizik and the kind of man he is...but also to your dad, and the type of man he was as well. BTW...what is wrong with wearing polyester pants with no belt? confused
