Just a thought, as the coaches add on to the family.

  • I have said this many times and actually used it as the basis for a paper on Management Theory, but the coaches at Auburn rely heavily on creating team synergy for their success. By definition, synergy means two things working together to produce more than the sum of their individual outputs. I always thought synergy was some bs thing scholars came up with for workplace motivation seminars, but this team and its coaches show it's real.

Of course there are parts that stick out more than others because of statistics and distinct ability. In the paper I used a nascar reference. In nascar the difference between first and last can be miniscule. Having a winning car is often based on harmony achieved between the driver, car, and crew. The driver gets most of the credit, sure, and a really good one can make an average team look great. But you can't win with a great driver and great crew that can't work with each other. Coach Chizik's plan for recruiting and getting this team in a position to win was centered around togetherness. And, like he says, he just "worked the plan."

Someone last year asked what former Auburn coach was most like Gene Chizik. I replied Shug Jordan. My reason was this: I think Coach Chizik is a leader of men. I think you could line up Coach Chizik at any competitive sport and he will find a way to make his team better. People forget about Coach Jordan coaching other sports and his fantastic military career. He was just a fantastic leader of men. Interestingly enough, they are our Championship winning coaches.

  • Excellent observation!! Coach Jordan was a great man and a great coach. Coach Chizik's ability to keep this staff together for what will soon be 3 straight years is a true credit to his vision, honesty and leadership. When all the different gears of a car, or business or football team work together, sychronized for the greater good of all each can achieve their full potential. In our football team's case they achieved greatness. Even with all the awards Coach Chiz does not get the credit he deserves, which is okay with him. Just another of his many qualities.

  • Synergy as a quote:

"Know your role and shut your hole."

If everyone does this, it seems to work out.

Chuck Person was supposed to have given a speech about roles...
