Jucos....

  • I have never, ever understood not recruiting the juco ranks. For one thing, its easier to recruit because there are not massive amounts of jucos that have football teams and a little time spent establishing a network will make identifying prospects easier. There is a huge misnomer out there that programs place the top juco prospects and its a waste of time to go after planted recruits. That's absolutely false. Most planted juco guys are unmotivated and never pan out. The reason to recruit jucos harder are for the late bloomers that develop physically or for other reasons after high school. These guys are highly motivated and can become immediate superstars. This is why the NFL scours the small college ranks - late bloomers. It's interesting to me that two of the better dynasties in the NFL in my lifetime thrived off small college guys - the Pats and the Cowboys under JJ. I really hope Gus seeks that talent. And guess who recruits juco guys better than anybody today - our little adversary to the West.

I think Gene got wrapped up into recruiting rankings, to an extent. I also think one of Gene's weaknesses was not wanting to hurt the feelings of the HS recruits by bringing in JUCO players. JMHO, but Gene seemed to have lost the fire in his belly in letting his players compete. When Gene saw that not all of these young men were producing, it seemed to me he just let it ride. Gene did not discipline and he played favorites. That is a recipe for disaster, as we saw the last 2 years. Gene rode the hype of the 2010 BCSNC and did not handle the success very well at all.

  • I think we should always evaluate the JUCO ranks. It seemed that CGC lost sight of the potential gold in that area. But, plus you have to be able to develop the players -- regardless of it being the normal route right out of high school or from the JUCO ranks. This was the area I was most disappointed from previous staff. Better days ahead! WDE!

Recruiting some of them to fit specific needs is fine. Recruiting a lot of them year after year leads to big trouble because your team turns over too fast. Plus, many of them didn't go to junior college because they were late bloomers but because they had issues which are likely to follow them.

Saybin turns his team over quite regularly (mainly processing freshmen and sophomores) and seems to do quite fine. He gets the most talent on campus wherever he can regardless of source. I'm not talking 15 guys a year - I'm talking 4-6.

I get what you are saying and agree. But I also agree with PM. Some of the juco guys are there for a reason. Either they were grade issues or off the field issues. And both of those tend to be issues for a while. You have your exceptions to that. But you can find more stories of great HS guys that just couldnt get the grades together.

Some kids cant get their grades together and then at juco they do. But at juco you are taking kids and putting them in small calsses so they can either focus better that way or they just need more hands on help. Then that kid does get to a Major University and he is in class with around 100 other kids and the grades fall off and he either leaves the school or fails to mee tthe eligability standard and gets booted.

The off field issue kids have the example of Cam a kid in bad situation that made good on his chance. And then you have the kids that never learned from their misdoings and bring that trouble with them.

We are all very knowledgeable about teh kids that made good out of juco. But there are a virtual littany of kids that we forget about due to their not being able to get right.

  • AU has had some of JC recruits not pan out:

    Eltoro freeman
    demond washinghton
    joel bonomolo
    raven gray
    rosezella grayden

So for 3 good JC recuits (CAM, Fairley, Mosley) we have had 5 not so good recruits.

That's kinda true. He isn't turning over starters or even back ups. He's weeding out the bottom of the barrel. That's different. I think Phillip is implying that you don't want to turn over a large number of contributors too quickly.

It's nice for a kid to come in, be 2nd or 3rd string guy, then become a part of a rotation, then become a starter (or a solid back up for 2 or 3 years...but a contributor nonetheless). JUCO kids are more likely to come in and start or contribute for a year or two and then be gone. It creates more holes more often I think.

But I do agree with you that it's good to hit the JUCO ranks a little more often than we have in recent years. Aaron Rogers was a JUCO QB.

It also allows time to see where a player might best be used. Jeremy Shockey went to JUCO as a defensive player, turned into a TE, went to Miami, and became a star. Fairley was an offensive lineman coming out of high school, switched to DT in JUCO.

If you pick and chose by need, JUCO players can really help.

True, but Eltoro and Raven Gray were guys we had originally tried to sign out of high school.

They weren't guys that we found by recruiting successful JUCO players. We took them from the JUCO ranks because we had offered them prior to JUCO. (same with Fairley).
