John L. Smith attempting to explain his leaving Weber State SIAP

  • I know Phillip had a post about the hypocrisy of it all, but here is John L. Smith being interviewed by Dan Patrick on his decision to leave Weber State and be Arkansas interim coach. I can't help but think by just listening to this guy that he is not going to turn out to be a good decision for Arkansas. I know it is his personal choice to do what he deems fit for his future, but he just sounded timid and unsure about anything Dan asked him.

You can tell he was trying to sugar coat Dan's first question about if Arkansas contacted him first or if he called. Sounds to me like he called Arkansas and tried to spruce it up by saying "Someone asked me if it was a possibility, would I return to Arkansas... so that's how it started." Sounds like BS to me, but I would like to hear other's opinions.

  • Does he really need to explain? Go try to win a national title at Arkansas, have your career blow up if you do. Or.... Coach at Weber State.

    No brainer.

    The Auburn Guy

  • WOW. That guy's awful to listen to. He fumbles all the questions. I am shocked he's had multiple head coaching gigs.

That said, he sort of talks like Les Miles. So, maybe there's something to it.

Um yeah, it's something called integrity there, guy. If you make a promise to one place and then say "Oh well screw you guys, this is a better gig over here" then you have no integrity and you will be thought of as a joke. He sat there and made that speech about "Oh Weber State is my alma mater and I love this place blah blah blah blah" and then contacts Arkansas about a temporary coaching job.

I'll put it this way, when I look at someone's resume one of the first things I look at is longevity at each particular position. If I see someone who hops jobs every few months, their resume goes straight in the trash.

Come on guy, refer to my original post, that's really all there is to it.

It's very rare that any coach is going to fulfil his contract nowadays. Coaches are always moving. Every coach is going to say the same things and do what they do at a particular university, until the bigger job comes along.

He left an irrelevant program. Yeh, there's probably 5 or 6 weber state fans who are pissed right now, but they will get over it. Have you ever even seen a weber state game on tv?

This is a better position, better pay, better resume builder, better situation in all regards. Staying at Weber St is a bad professional move all around. Not all opportunities come at the right time, under the right circumstances. Also not everybody went to Auburn so they don't have the alma mater love like we do, and it shouldn't be expected.

It's a fantastic opportunity for Smith even for a single year, why waste it?

I agree. If he bombs at uaf, he's not going to get any better offers than Weber State anyway. Of course, if he does bomb at uaf, there's a chance he will end up coaching at a high school somewhere.

He is on an interim basis and then where is he going to be? Yes, it is possible that he could get the permanent job afterwards if they do well, but it's not a given. Certainly not with a guy with a track record like his, and all in all that isn't the point. The point is professional obligation and integrity. No one trusts a guy that goes to his alma mater and says he loves the place and he is there for the long haul and then ups and leaves for seemingly 'greener' pastures as soon as he has the opporturnity.

A couple of weeks ago everyone was talking about how Gus Malzahn wouldn't leave the Ark State program because he was a better person than to just betray the program like that. Are we just holding him to a different standard because he was a part of the Auburn program?

I'm aware it happens in college football, but that doesn't mean it's right. Sometimes there are bigger things like developing boys into young men, teaching character and committment, and showing integrity over hopping to another job.

You act like he is going to be the permanent coach at Arky when, in fact, there is much reason to the contrary. I highly doubt Arkansas does much under him given the current situation, and the fact that he will be playing LSU, Bama, and Auburn isn't going to help his chances.

Prediction: Arkansas finishes 4th in the Western Division and they find a permanent coach in January whose name is not John L. Smith.

I never thought GM would leave Arky St. because he was a good man and didn't want to leave the program that way. I didn't think he would leave because it wasn't the best move for him. Of course, I never though uaf would offer the job to GM in the first place.

I don't really think Long and Smith are full of integrity, but this is Smith's last chance at a big time program. He's old, his record stinks and no one else is going to come knocking. He jumped at the chance. At the end of the season, uaf will hire another coach and this current staff will be looking for jobs. uaf would have to win the west for Smith to get any consideration and we all know that's not going to happen. JMO

Integrity and character can easily be covered up with hundred dollar bills. Not saying it's right, just saying it's common.
