  • I don't weigh in often, but I have been a coach for 39 years. Any higher level football team is a large, complex operation. Anybody who has coached will tell you about the teams that exceeded expectations and ones that mystified us with a myriad of issues. All that being said, let me make a few points about one person that I personally know.. I realize I am bucking a trend to make these statements...so be it.

    As we seek fault and a fall guy for our present state...... Let's stop dragging Jay Jacobs through the mud... I am not seeking any popularity in making my statements here, nor do I really care about those who really are fans in the fanatic sense (nor am I calling anyone a fanatic). Those that seek to have a football program vaildate their reason for living are beyond logic, too. We love them in their own way, but this message is not for them. I have been an Auburn fan since I was a little boy on a farm in the 1950's, with only a radio to connect me with my team. I am an Auburn man...up or down...winning or losing...

    Jay Jacobs is a smart, loyal, passionate, honest, and meticulous person. He is an Auburn man, through and through. He is the same guy who was responsible for the staff that put the NC together. He has not changed. I knew him as a college football player and high school coach in the 80's and I have not been around a more organized, inspirational, God-fearing coach in my life. The kids would run through walls for him. He is a fantastic person...and he is human....just like any other AD in college sports. Ask the Texas AD....ask any other AD that sees the ebbs and flows of his sport programs. Jay is a solid AD. The same people who spoke in glowing terms about him at the top are often the same folks who have decided he is an idiot in difficult times.There is no magic and no magic person to save us...only hard work, trial and error and persistence will work. We are not pleased to be in Alabama's football shadow right now, but we will overcome...due to our traditions, work habits, commitment to excellence... and a steady, solid AD like Jay Jacobs. Nuff said.....

    I respectfully disagree. While JJ may be an inspirational God-fearing man with morals and orgainizational skills that alone does not make a good AD. He hired a coach that went 5-19 and proved absolutely nothing before he was hired. While many teams take a chance on an up and coming DC or OC, Chizik actually had a record. His teams lost more games his second year than his first. Of course, he only won 3 games his first season and two his second season. While I'm grateful for the 2010 season, I can not look at what Chizik or Jacobs have done and I can not look at the direction we are going and have faith in what they are doing.

Housel gave in to pressure, made a stupid mistake, and had to resign. Some of us believe the same about jacobs, he made a stupid mistake (actually several stupid mistakes) and he should resign.

Housel gave in to pressure, made a stupid mistake, and had to resign. Some of us believe the same about jacobs, he made a stupid mistake (actually several stupid mistakes) and he should resign.

  • Coach, your loyalty to Jay is to be commended. He coached under you in the 80's in high school. Yall were close, i Know. He's a good guy. But as Jay says this is a business and we are "customers". He made a Bad business decision by giving Chiz that ridiculous buyout. The baseball team is bad. The basketball teams are awfull. Who do you blame for all of this? Jay runs a multi million dollar business. If this was the private sector he'd already be gone even with a great 2010 year. No need to fire him, just move him back to fundraising. He's a good auburn man , but not a good AD.

  • You cannot determine his basketball hires at the present time. One of them is in her first year. Baseball has not done as well as one would hope but it is tough with the rules as they are do build a team quickly. However the background and track record were good in the baseball hire. I think it is hard not to make a change in football but Chizik's background was solid in spite of Iowa State and he was even offered the coach in waiting position before Muschamp. If he had not got inpatient he would have got a better school than Iowa State. That said, whether done by Jay or a new AD, it needs to be done quickly and a new coach brought in soon after.

    He has made many more bad decisions than good ones, as a quick glance around the programs at Auburn will indicate. Baseball is a total disaster and both basketball teams have at best continued to be mired in mediocrity. My understanding is he was a big reason why Marsh no longer wanted to coaching swimming at Auburn. Really, outside of the equestrian team, it's hard to see anything positive right now in the department.

    The God-fearing stuff is essentially hogwash, we need an athletic director, not a preacher. His decisions can be well meaning all day long, but it won't make them intelligent decisions.

    That is 100 percent untrue. You can make a case for or against Jay, but the notion that he is a puppet doing what he is told is way off base. He hired who he set out to hire from the start, who he wanted to hire.

    This is correct, quite a few people were surprised by JJ hiring Chizik, and some people have suggested that he actually made the move to increase his own power - it was a decision clearly his own. Who knows the full story, but it sounds like he sounded the idea off Pat Dye, but he had Chizik in mind around this same time of year as Tuberville's season was falling apart. So, he was thinking about Chizik for some time.

    Now, what in the world he saw in a coach in the middle of a ten game losing streak is another question. Probably that Gene was an "inspirational, God-fearing" guy also.

    Great post and appreciate the rational, respectful input.

    I'm not sure why some feel the need to call out "God fearing" as a negative, as I consider it a positive trait, along with the other positive traits you listed about Jay. I think questioning his intelligence or his overall competency are probably taking it too far, as 99.5% of the people here have no idea about him as a person.

    However, I will agree with others in saying that those positive traits don't prevent him from making poor decisions. He didn't hire Lebo, but he waited 3 seasons too long to fire him. He actually had a quicker trigger with Fortner. Baseball has not been handled any better.

    And in my opinion, I think where we are today validates the fact that the football hire was a poor decision as well. We won in 2010...with 25 of Tuberville's seniors that his staff had developed, Cam Newton, Mike Dyer, and Gus's offense. Nothing about anything I just listed required Chizik to do anything other than guide the train....which he did very well, unquestionably. Every other aspect of actually GROWING and developing this program has been a complete and utter failure.

    Guiding a championship team is 100% than building a championship team.

    Jacobs hired someone capable of guiding an existing team, not building, developing, and maintaining a team. As good as me be as a person and Auburn man, he has to be held accountable for these decisions. There is no mud dragging involved in that statement, simply accountability. Such suggestions can be made with all due respect.

    There is nothing to indicate that Chizik or Jay Jacobs will get us out of Bama's shadow as you call it. They(Bama) have traditions, work habits, and commitment to excellence just like we have. They also recruit well, just like us if not better most years and clearly have a system to succeed every year. (Defense).

    Currently AU has no system to succeed. We are nationally ranked as one of the worst offensive teams in the Country. We hired a 5-19 coach. He is so heavily involved on 1 side of the ball that he has no experience in. JJ hired this guy, and will be fired with this guy.

    So No, JJ is not our man, and neither is Chizik.

    I am not trying to assasinate anyone's character - and most people on here aren't. However, "good man" does not necessarily equal "good coach."

    I try to be a very good, ethical, Christian person, but that does not mean that I can coach football, or play the piano, or be a good accountant.

    Did Jay understand how unpopular the Chizik hire would be? Did he think he was going out on a limb and did he think that if Chizik failed it might result in his own career's demise? That hire was such a shocker to me at the time. I'd love to know what was behind that hire from Jay's honest perspective. I know I'll never get anything but the "politically correct" story from any interview of Jay. You know statements like I knew Gene was the perfect fit and he's the guy I wanted from the beginning. I'd like to know why he thought he was the perfect fit if he actually did. Was it because he didn't intimidate him like some of the big name coaches did? Was it because no big name coaches were interested? Was Jay looking for a bargain?

    You shouldn't get so riled up by people's opinions. I always try to teach my children that you can't hate someone for their opinion. Opinions are the result of our nature and nurture, plus what we have been exposed to in our lives.

    It makes me wonder why you take these opposing thoughts so personally (and seriously.) I agree with you that some fans tend to take things a little overboard, but such is life.

    May I suggest that you lean on your scripture and learn to forgive people. None of the comments you are thrashing against were about you. They are on a board made for opinions about Auburn sports.
