  • He seems to be good at teaching fundamentals. Checkout this link to his video profile while at Arkansas State that shows him "coaching up" his o linemen on the practice field.

He looks like a good hire and he's obviously familiar with Gus's high octane offense.

I'm not so sure about this one.... has anyone else looked at the records and scores of the other teams he has been apart of? at MS State every one of those teams was 3-9. Kansas 2-10 with no really outstanding scores....

He was the OL coach not the HC or OC. Go back and look at the statistics a line has control over - # of sacks, rushing yards, etc - and then report back to me.

    C- on your research.

  • I believe Grimes and Ellis crossed pathes at Miss St so hopefully that means Ellis has some insight and endorsed the hire.

Ellis Johnson definitely thinks highly of Grimes. However, Malzahn didn't need to ask a lot of questions about Grimes. He spent all of this coaching with him.

  • WOW what a resume!!! He has coached under tons of very talented and respected head coaches all across the country!! Tiggerific hire Gus! Hard to believe he was only at ASU last year.... Good for us! Yeah Malzahn! Keep the exciting hiring going - Yeeehaw!!!

Great video! Anyone who watches it should be excited about his hire. He has "it" and his age will not be a problem. I'm nine years older than him and played golf last year walking and carrying my bag shooting in the 70s and beating a lot of players younger than me. WAR EAGLE !

Solid resume, looks like a great hire to me, and Gus wants him. That satisfies me and I know that is gonna make Gus happy just knowing that I'm satisfied. OH, that's not how it works? But I thought, from reading so many posts, that pleasing you and me was what this coaching search was all about. You mean, he is really trying to build a team that will work together to coach our kids up, and help them become a force in the SEC. Darn, and I thought it was all about me.

Please note the sarcasm dripping from this post. Welcome aboard Coach Grimes. Strap it on tight cause this ain't the old Ark. Intercollegiate Conf and the Gus Bus is movin toward high gear. WDE.

It;s sad that you have to point out the fact that you are being sarcastic. War Eagle and welcome Coach Grimes!

  • The coaches originally hired by Chizik looked good but the staff didn't work well together in the long term.

Odds are, this staff will have changes after one year so I'm not worried or ecstatic either way.

Even Gus doesn't know yet if this staff is a dud or a stud.. Lets give it time.

I seem to be the only one who is not impressed. But I'm not this seems like a plan b hire of a coach who has had moderate success at lower tear schools. Hope I'm wrong

You're right. It is a hire that has seen a lot of excperience at different levels over as fair amount of southern country. The common element in his assignments has been success. Don't see much wrong with that. We assess a coaches program by the simple scale, wins v losses. OK, let the next season play out and judge by wins v losses and my guess is that we'll like Coach Grimes. His record at the last school sure beat the heck out of what Auburn did probably with a lot more talent if you believe the reports of recruiting judges.

  • It appears to me that Gus is building an offensive staff that is very familiar with his offense and he feels comfortable with. This I'm sure will help free him up so he can at least spend some of his time at defensive meetings and practices. I think that it is important for the head coach to be visible and have input to players on both sides of the ball.

  • This is a good hire. Here are the reasons I believe this
    1. There is no one of any standing in the coaching world at any level that does not believe that JB is an excellent OL coach. Nobody-High School, College or NFL. When you find one let me know.
    2. This guy has been hired buy some of the best head coaches in the buisness and has never left the job unless the head coach left (read fired) . One exception was Va Tech. for Texas A&M for a significant pay raise.
    3. The other name mentioned, Hand of Vanderbilt, is no better. Who is he? Never heard of him until recently. JBs beens putting his players in the NFL for 25 years. Seriously who is he? Why do we think the OL coach from Vandy is a homerun hire? Sorry, don't get it.

I don't know how many games Auburn will lose next year but I'll bet none of them will be because JB Grimes was the OL coach. He teaches and demands physical football from his players. God knows we need some of that.

It really seems like a great fit. Malzahn has a very well defined offensive philosophy. It's very important that that all of his coaches are on board with it and there is a synergy. It's also important that the offensive guys and the defensive guys can see eye to eye and get along.

I really like what Gus is doing and find it very hard to criticize any decision he has made about the program. He's been here barely three weeks and it seems like 6 months.

Also, do you have any insight into the type of recruiter that Grimes is and how he'll fit into the recruiting efforts? Most of the names that have been floated concerning the remaining coaching position vacancies all seem to have exceptional recruiting reputations.

BTW, for some perspective for those who have never heard of Grimes, how many of us can name more than three offensive line coaches in the SEC let alone in the NCAA? These guys get in the hoss' faces. They don't necessarily get a lot of face time.
