  • a sign that we struck the hail out on all the national OL prospects that visited or did we decide to only sign 1 RB in this class and take his place with a raw in-state OL to keep from getting skunked in-state? Don't see how we would take a 270 pound kid over some of the monster OL we have brought in. Perception is more important for Auburn than any other elite team in the country and we are not doing very well in the perception game right now - in fact we are sucking it up! You mean to tell me this kid wouldn't have committed the 3rd week of January??? I'm okay with taking a project but not in the middle of a PR butt kicking we are taking in the perception arena with the loss of 2 coordinators and a disappointing season from a perception standpoint. I'd love for this kid to be the next Devanute Sigler - hope it turns out that way but can we be smarter with these moves??

  • I hear a lot about this perception issue you speak of....but I hear it mostly here, on our board. I'm in Texas, so maybe I'm just missing the local media where ever you are. But out here, as far as I can tell, we're replacing coordinators, just like a lot of other programs are doing. Where's the chaos tied to that?

Losing Yeldon doesn't look good, but it didn't seem to rock the national scene (except on message boards....mostly Auburn message boards).

As for signing this kid.....it was a little surprising to me too, and does make you wonder what it means about our hopes or expectations with some other lineman we're after. But I'm pretty sure they don't recruit with "perception" in mind. I think they are thinking about what happens on the field in 2014 more than what some blog poster or message board meat head (not referring to you, just "posters" in general) says in the middle of December about a recruit.

Sit back and let things play out for the next two weeks. You have to stop evaluating the program on a daily basis, as if any 5 or 15 day stretch, good or bad, defines us. We'll be fine.

Just call it having lived in the state of AL for most of my life and living here now. Auburn has been caught drunk at the wheel and/or asleep at the wheel way too often in our past and we don't have the grace of the flagship status to bounce back as quickly. Yes, we won a national title 2 years after Tubs - but without arguably the greatest college player to play the game, that would not have happened. Auburn has got to hit on all cylinders to become a truly recognized elite team. With a good DC, we could have followed up a national title with a 9 win season and Auburn would be getting some continued props in the national and local media. Instead we are getting recruits flipped that have been committed for 6 months, having coordinators taking pay cuts to go to Arky State, and flipping recruits from Southern Miss with no viable offers from anybody else. That doesn't sound good when you put it all together. Does that mean I think the program is falling apart? No. It would just have been smarter to save that committment until later even if it meant possibly losing somebody that was going to Southern Miss - not a guy that you'll face every year and probably never. We have got to be smarter and start hitting on all cylinders if we want to be a truly elite program.

I understand you don't hear or feel the perception problem in Texas. But you better believe kids in our primary recruiting zone can feel it and hear it. These kids may not read message boards every day but they do follow recruiting intently. Parading in all these national prospects that don't get subjected to the perception game is great but if you don't get committments and signees - does it really matter?

He's the fifth commitment from Alabama. The coaches don't consider him a project. They don't make recruiting decisions based on PR. There is plenty of room for more OL.

Recruits make decisions based on the public image of a program. And it's more intensely watched in the Southeast more than any other place. Elite athletes want to play with elite athletes. That's a fact.

  • I have no problem taking as many quality OL and DL as possible. Perception is not that important IMO. We view things through the eyes of uber fans. The overwhelming majority of fans don't even follow recruiting, so perception among the board folks and perception among the fanbase are two totally different things. I also think that RB is the easiest position to replace, so losing TJY is not a huge deal IMO.

Your comments about winning with a great player is a different discussion. Meyer says "see Tim Tebow", Bowden says "see Charlie Ward", Vince says "see Herschel", and Mack says "see Vince Young".

Malzahn leaving for Arkansas St is a different discussion as well.

But we're talking recruiting, and you seem to be of the mind set that the wheels have come off, that we aren't competing, and dangerously close to doom.

Here on 247, we're down the list a bit in the team ratings, but that's because we only have 16 recruits. Our average rating per recruit is 89.69, which is good for #11 in the country. And to get to a team that is at least 1 whole point better than us (90.69 or better), you have to get to #5 Florida, who is at a 91 avg. In other words, numbers 6-12 are all nearly identical in quality. We could add one significant commitment and jump 3 or 4 spots.

On Rivals, if you sort by "average star" ratings, we're #6 in the country at 3.63. Alabama is #7 at 3.59. Texas is #5 at 3.64. The only SEC team in front of us is Florida at 3.72.

On ESPN, we're #13, but there is only one team in front of us with fewer commitments than us. As we add more, we're likely to pass quite a few of those in front of us, as many of them already have 20+ commitments.

On Scout, our average star rating is 3.5, or #10 in the country. Alabama is #8 at 3.59, and LSU is #12 at 3.43.

I'm telling you, you are living day by day with this thing right now, and it's not a good way to get a realistic perspective on things. Step back, look at a little bit bigger picture, and you'll see that we are still recruiting well, we still have TONS of very, very young talent that will be playing our games for the next 2-3 years.

The present is confusing at most, the FUTURE is bright at the least.

Recruits make decisions based on the public image of a program.

Recruits make their decisions based on a myriad of criteria. Certainly public image may be one of them but its not the main reason. It's usually more about when thay will be a starter, will they have to play another position, proximity to family, relationship with coaches, and how much $$$ the REC has promised.

I was just reading back through this....

Read that portion I noted above.

Do you have any idea how crazy a statement like that sounds coming from someone on a message board? I don't think we're all stupid just because we're here on this board. But come on, you are really going to start saying things like "we have got to be smarter"?

When it comes to making decisions about the football program...say, like hiring a coordinator, or taking a commitment from a recruit...how much of the total information needed to make such a decision do you assume you have?

Do you think you have 90% of all there is to know about the situation?

    Do you think it's 75%

    Maybe half, 50%?

My guess is, when Chizik goes through the process of making hires and signing players, we here on the board probably have anywhere from 2% to 10% (that's generous) of all of the information that goes into such a decision.

Armed with essentially zero insight into what is actually going on, how on earth do you manage the arrogance to say "we have got to be smarter" when it comes to running Auburn football?

    This is a real question.

  • Lol you're just a "glass is half empty" kinda guy. You can't always worry so much about star ratings. This OL has good technique and he can eat his cornbread to gain the essential weight. Remember some of the best players have come from three star backgrounds. The coaches aren't stupid and they do their homework.
