  • A Gaussian process is a pretty smart way to approach ranking, usually finding the best predictor fit. Especially for future determinations when ranking the factors that make up those intangible qualities. A Gaussian process is not affected by larger numbers of variables, and this can have an infinite number of random variables so long as the variables themselves have a Gaussian distribution. If any of you have run SAS, you know that adding variables up to a certain point in a normal regression will muddle up your best fit and create a totally inefficient prediction equation.

  • Irish,

We could get really silly and apply a Tukey-Kramer analysis or any of a 1/2 dozen other statistical pair-wise, post hoc comparisons, and I'd think we'd get exactly what you conclude -- there are no statistical differences among the top 10.

    here are my calculations:

    O/A composite player qum total 2 0.9991 Reuben Foster 99.9100 4 0.9975 Montravius Adams 198.2842 13 0.9928 Dee Liner 292.1990 24 0.9953 Carl Lawson 380.0339 31 0.9819 Greg Bryant 458.6583 89 0.9582 Tray Matthews 526.3694 102 0.9540 Tyrone Crowder 584.2324 117 0.9445 Trey Johnson 632.0558 166 0.9252 Jordan Wilkins 670.0919 176 0.9201 Tashawn Bower 699.9632 204 0.9152 Jayron Kearse 722.7839 233 0.9042 Jason Smith 739.6265 241 0.9025 Earnest Robinson 751.8405 298 0.8909 Jeremy Johnson 760.3606 420 0.8753 Cameron Toney 766.1138 510 0.8665 Arshad Jackson 769.9209 521 0.8656 Kamryn Melton 772.3935 522 0.8656 Lemond Johnson 773.9571 570 0.8610 Jahmere Irvin-Sills 774.9136 576 0.8606 Jarrad Davis 775.4854 N/A Jimmy Hutchinson 775.4854 N/A Daniel Carlson 775.4854

O/A = 247 overall rank composite = 247 composite rating player = (obvious) qum total = cummulative total score for team based on 247 Gaussian distribution formula

    Carl Lawson is .9853
Hutcheson and Carlson are .8148 each
If AU finishes with Adams, Crowder, Kearse, Matthews, and Bryant and there are no adjustments to individual rankings, AU will finish with 775.1 points.

  • Gooooood Gaaaaaawwwwd! I love your ardor, I even share it, because well, it's FUN, isn't it... but really now, we have exceeded ridiculous, and I am probably more guilty than any of you, because, GAWD help me, I LOVE this stuff. Wait a moment... I'm over breathing... Okay, now, that's better. Here it is:

None of this is truly measurable for so many reasons: A) the kids may or may not grow another inch, may or may not gain 15 lbs., B) may have a career ending injury in their senior year of high school, C) may or may not become faster, D) may have a lousy senior season, E) may be arrested for any number of things before they ever set foot on a college campus, F) it is still, er... only almost August, so half our commits could change their minds!, G) Some may never qualify academically, H) Some will have personal problems that keep them from going to college at at all, and I) May drop a star between now and Signing Day.

So all this begs the question: WHY ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH do we put ourselves through this mumbo jumbo? I'll tell you why: Because we LOVE IT! WDE! :-)

  • Bobber15, thanks. I haven't laughed that hard in months. Kirkhonican Cochran Deceleration formula, that's a gem.
