If you were Chizik, what would you do?

  • Its easy to cast stones at the job Chizik has done. Its probably the worst in modern Auburn history. To go from first to worst in less than two seasons takes some effort, really. If Chizik is doing the best he can do, then the answer is there is not much more he can do. If he isn't doing the best he can he doesn't need to be here. Either way...

I feel sorry for Coach Chizik. I really do. He says in his book that God put him at Auburn for a purpose. I personally don't think God puts people into coaching positions, but that's a subject for another venue.

If I were Gene, I would MAKE SURE I have one more year. I would go ahead and sacrifice CSL and find an OC with lots of experience with several offenses, that is not currently working. I would give him the rest of this year and next year to make something happen. There won't be too many quality guys currently coaching who will take a potentially career suicide position in mid stream.

I would get this recruiting class on the books, then fire Trooper/Luper in mid February. Let the new/temporary OC help bring in replacement positiion coaches to get back to decent for the coming season. Some guys who want to pad their resume's for a season.

If he gets next year headed in the right direction, then he would have a much better chance to start with a new OC, who could hire his own staff..

That doesn't sound very good but its probably what I would do.

    What would YOU do?

  • I would respond but this thread will probably turn into "well if you know so much why haven't you applied? Maybe they'll hire you" or " Do you get paid millions to make those decisions?"

I would get myself in CSLs meeting and make sure that I did what works and quit with the cute crap.

What is first and foremost is getting through this rough seasona nd getting the offense on track. And thats the way to do it. If I have been involved i would evaluate my level of invlovement and see if maybe I am the problem. Sometimes it takes seeing it to understand that you are the cause not the cure.

If the latter is the case then I would give CSL the rope to hang himself and make sure everyone knew it. then go out in Dec when we are watching football instead of playing it and find the guy that can fix it and throw a boat load of money at him. Then I would get out of his way.

But I am not a micro-manager. So I realy cant say what he would or shoudl do. Ilet my managers tie their own noose around thier necks and then terminate them if they do not perform. If you told me during the interview that you could get it done...then I trust you and if you dont I term your butt.

  • The first few posts make my point - Gene is in a tough situation. Nobody can come up with a good way to fix the situation. Where does that leave JJ and Chizik? Only time will tell.

One option that might put a bullet into the broken-legged horse's head is to fire CSL and make Trooper the OC for the balance of the year. He can't say he doesn't know the players or what he is working with.

He knows as much about the program and the players as anyone else. From reading posts on this board, it sounds like we would see a different set of starters out there.

I surely don't know, and apparently none of us have a good solution.

    Agreed..

But they wouldn't follow that up with a workable plan either. IF you were Gene, and know only what you know now, what would you do?

Its a tough question. And I guarantee you Gene is on anti-depressants and isn't sleeping very well right now. The Auburn experience shouldn't be that bad for anyone - including the Chizik family.

I've gotten to the point that I don't care if Auburn wins or loses (this year). Its a defense mechanism I installed after the MSU game. I get too excited during a game to be SO disappointed when I allow myself to get invested in a season.

    There's a tuberville analogy here....

Here's how it goes. A factor in CTT's decision, (and I think there were several), was that he was going to have to go into a 'decision' year with new coordinators. One, it's not the easiest proposition to get top flight coaching talent to sign on under those circumstances. Two, what if he ran into another Franklin situation where the rest of the staff basically failed to buy into CTF's style. Pretty much screwed either way.

At the end of the day, he wasn't feeling good, his prospects weren't good. So he did what was best for everyone... he looked for a way to fold his hand and get out before being forced out.

Now, Chizik will likely have to replace both coordinators, (making CSL a sacrificial lamb and CBVG will run to the nearest professional job). I'm not saying that CGC is going to call it a tenure at AU. I'm just pointing out the similarity.

    Thoughts?

Surely, Gene sees the righting on the wall. But he has come too far and proven that he can win it all to just give up. In my opinion, he has to clean house on the offensive side of the ball, put his foot down and run this program with an iron fist, sit in on as many coordinator meetings as he wants information on, and recruit players to Auburn who are willing to put in the work to get onto the field.

I'm thinking he has to give the new OC (one with more than one year of experience calling plays and who doesn't just know a few QB's in the league) the freedom to bring in the guys HE trusts to get the job done.

Otherwise, Eugene Chizik will be working on saving face so he can continue his career elsewhere.

  • I think he just needs to go into an offensive meeting (funny how that 'offensive meeting' could be seen in two ways or in this situation both meanings at the same time) and clean house. It should be obvious to the head coach where the problem lies, one of the coaches, i don't profess to know who is the root of this but the head coach should know who it is. At this point if you are the head coach this recruiting class doesn't mean much if you aren't here next season so i would make the cuts necessary to start this thing in the right direction. But it seems to me that there are definantly too many cooks in the kitchen.
It also seems to me if you hired CSL to run the offense then you should respect his opinions about what should be done, and in doing so let him sink or swim with the offense for the rest of the season. But I think CGC is too nice a guy and tries to give everyone a say which will probably prohibit him from allowing CSL to do what he was hired to do.

  • i agree with all of that. Also give BVG a security raise and allow him to replace pelton and thig as he sees fit with a serious group evaluation effort.

troop, loop and grimes have to go also. i realize grimes is a fantastic recruiter and would probably thrive under someone with more vision, leadership and passion than chizik but he isnt developing linemen. the talent of his line clearly makes up for a lack of intensity, technique and motivation.

im afraid Chizik is screwed. IMO, no talented assistant coach with character would gamble or sacrifice his career to work under GC and an executive committee known for manipulation and control.

Chizik is 36-33 as a head coach and that will more than likely drop under 500 by seasons end. even with a national title, he has yet to open real doors for coaches working under him. he has a reputation for jumping ship when a temporary philosophy isnt working and also takes control of specific aspects of the game.

Chizik is on his way down and out. hard to persuade quality coaches to jump on board.
