Let me start by saying that this is not a post to simply bash this incoming class. Today was undeniably a failure in terms of signing our top uncommitted prospects, but there are some quality players in this class who should be able to contribute meaningfully over the next four years. A high retention rate and 8-10 solid contributors can make this class a success.
This is not a post intended to bash the coaches either. Some serious reflection is obviously warranted, but the ins and outs of what culminated in today's showing will be hashed out over time by those in a better position to do so than myself.
My main intention with this post is to understand some of the recent 'insider' (not the staff, they only report what they are told and BM/PM/etc do a great job. Im referring to those who intentionally cultivate a reputation on the various Boards of being "in the know") comments guaranteeing certain positive results today. Was there ever any real information behind these predictions or were these simply attempts at generating buzz? I don't want to mention names, but as recently as a day or two ago there were calls that Auburn would pick up two consensus five stars today and that the coaches and other insiders were generally expecting a big showing. Without putting too fine a point on it, this obviously did not come to pass, and I can't help but wonder if feeding such unrealistic expectations only serves to increase the negative backlash when those expectations are inevitably dashed. In life that sometimes happens, so its not the not-quite-stellar results themselves that I bemoan, its the disconnect in perception.
