Huntsville BBQ. Whatcha got?

  • I moved here from Montgomery four years ago, and the only things I miss are my old barber, and Sam's BBQ on the Atlanta Highway. I just can't seem to find any good BBQ here. Lawler's is chain crap. I tried some place called Gibson's that was close to the Arsenal, and I wouldn't feed that meat to my dog. Greenbrier's is okay, but it's a long drive, and I'm not really a big fan of white sauce. Anybody got another place I should try? I would prefer places near the Arsenal. Oh, and if you know a good barber, lay that on me too. If they don't clean your neckline with a straight razor, don't bother telling me about them.

  • Both are in Madison for a barber go to buddys family hair care on Hughes road tell him Jody sent you, and for bbq I am a huge fan of Thomas's pit bbq on hay 72.

Buddy doesn't do a straight razor but has cut my hair since I was a child and is a great barber.

  • Whiskers in Madison on Hwy 72 is a pretty good barber. Airika is probably the best one there. I used to go to Roosters too.

Jody's right about Thomas Pitt BBQ - but another one that's really good is Chuck Wagon on Hwy 20 (Madison Blvd). You take the Wall Triana exit off 565 and then head left (west) on Hwy 20 for about 1/4 mile.

Their hours a little screwy, but the brisket is un-freaking-real....

As far as the barber thing - I'm a clippers kind of guy, no guards please. And Whiskers does the whole service - hair, wash and neck massage after. They also do face shaves if you want.

I grew up in Huntsville. There is only one place to get BBQ- Greenbriar Original in downtown Greenbriar. I know its a bit of a drive as you mentioned, but it's always worth the trip for me (and our family farm is 2 miles down the road).
PS whenever I fly home to visit, I go to Greenbriar before I go see Mom.

Today is a great day to love Auburn, a little better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow.

  • Whitt's BBQ. Family owned (my wife grew up next to them) North Alabama style (pulled pork and white sauce). By far the best for this family. Even grew to love the turkey after I developed an allergy to pork. Based in Athens, believe they have a place in Huntsville and a few in Tenn.

  • Thomas Pit has great ribs and potato salad. It is the only potato salad I like that is not homemade. Whitt's BBQ is good. It is moist and flavorful, esp with a little of their red vinegar bbq sauce added. There are also 2 Whitt's in Decatur...one on 6th Ave. And one on Spring Ave. Both are takeouts. Their BBQ chicken is also good.

  • All of you mentioning Thomas Pit, I grew up in Madison & eating Thomas Pit BBQ.
Mr. Thomas recently retired and sold the business and I was told he sold it to.....how do I say as not to offend.....to people not from around here. Supposedly a brand new staff, so I have not eaten there since.
Have you guys been there recently?
    Has it changed at all?

Is that why they're open on Sundays now?

    Was wondering about that.

AND WHY NO LOVE FOR CHUCKWAGON???

If you've not eaten there and tried the brisket... you're cheating yourself. Their ribs are ridiculously good too.

  • The BEST BBQ hands down is BIG BOB GIBSONS in Decatur. Has won EVERY NATIONAL BBQ cookoff. Once you eat at BIG BOBs, you will not want to go anywhere else. Worth the drive.

We cater that stuff in every lunch we have at work. It's ok. Not jumping up and down for it. But then again, that may be because it's a 100+ plate cater job v/s eating it fresh there.
