How much is too much?

  • Crying in the supermarket aisles. A tantrum at the mall. Pleading at the playground. You see it almost every day.

    Spoiled brats.

No one likes them. No one wants to raise them. No one wants to marry them, work with them, or support them. My question to the board is this: is there a correlation between how much people are given, and how much they expect? Has your approach on Christmas been altered in an attempt to not raise greedy little children? How much is too much? I figured we could talk about something at least semi-relevant, unless you guys would prefer we re-hash what Dee Liner had for breakfast. (He drank ORANGE juice from a RED cup!?!?!?!)

I definitely think there is a correlation between what is given and what is expected...without getting political, it is also evident in this day of giveaway government.

  • I am 45, I will say I was raised by two loving and caring parents who would not hesitate to wear my butt out with a belt when I did wrong. And at school if you back talked or got into trouble the principal would wear you out with that paddle. Oh how I remember those swats. But it made me a better person and stronger person. The problem today is, most kids are being raised by the internet and TV shows. Have you seen what is on TV lately. How many people my age took mind altering drugs to pay attnetion in school. Now it is almost forced upon parents to drug there kids so they dont have do deal with them. They want mindless zombies sitting there in a fog all day. And then we all wonder why we so many young adults who cannot handle or even cope with the simpliest stress in life freak out and do horrible things. You will hear some say put God back in the schools, I do agree with this, however I think you first put the discipline back in the schools and parents get over it if your kids gets there butt whooped, hell they probably needed it. Just my opinion of course.

Same here. I would never dream of acting the way kids do in public places these days. I was too afraid of the consequences: time out, grounding, privileges taken away, spankings, etc. Now, I actually hear parents pleading with their kids to behave! And the kids often just say "no!".

I understanding the reasoning, but it is mostly incorrect. It's partly about what you give, but it's mostly about when you give it. If you reinforce maladaptive behavior, you will see it more often in the future. I work with a ton of brats, and believe me, none of them you would call spoiled by any means.
