How can auburn fans be okay with what they see tonight?

  • The only aspect that deserves harsh comment is the ability of kickers to do what Tuberviles always did, get our defense a longer field and start defending from a touchback..

  • we are 6 and 0 for the first time since 04. We have a chance to win every game we play so while this team has some issues I will just enjoy the wins.

  • I don't see the "foot off the gas" that several of you commented on.

    We had two 3-and-outs. That happens. It doesn't mean you took your foot off the gas. We started the half with an interception that was thrown vertically, 30 YARDS down the field. That isn't conservative.

    Then we had the two 3-and-outs.

    The first one was a Fannin rush for 1 yard, then two incomplete passes on 2nd and long and 3rd and long.
    The second one was a McCalebb run for 2 yards, a Newton run for 5 yards, then a short incomplete pass. They threw the pass to the outside, probably thinking that Kentucky would be expecting the run on 3rd and 3.

    NONE of that is "conservative" or taking your foot off the gas. It's just simply what happens sometimes during a game. Ours just happen to happen in back-to-back possessions and came on the heels of our only turnover as well.

    That created a long dry spell for the offense, but it was only 2 possessions that were 3-and-out. The next two possessions after that totaled 28 plays and 158 yards and the game winning points.

    How people continue to complain about the offense is really surprising to me. We aren't going to score EVERY time we have the ball. The old complaint was that we go too fast and hurt our defense. Well that doesn't really happen either.

    This offense has now produced the two longest plays from scrimmage in Auburn history, as well as the longest drive in Auburn history by number of plays (19). What else does it need to do?

  • And yes, the defense did have a tough night. But it was against a pretty good offense and on the road.

    But don't forget, the defense has had it's moments this year.

    We held Mississippi State to 14 points and 246 yards. Against LSU and Georgia they averaged 15 points and 290 yards.

    South Carolina scored 27 on us and had 384 yards (but only 79 rushing). Against Southern Miss, Georgia, and Alabama, they averaged 31 points, 371 yards, and 175 yards rushing.

    Our defense looks really bad at times, but has looked really good at times too, and overall, we're not doing much worse against teams that anyone else.

    Kentucky got on a roll last night and their offense played well, along with out defense not playing that well (translation....our defensive line wasn't getting any pressure of any kind for the first time this year....that makes life rough on the secondary). It's still not the end of the world. We'll keep working with what we have. I think these coaches are making the most of it. We continue to be strong against the run, which is a big reason why the time of possession has started swinging in our direction.

    There are weakneses, but UK contributed to our weakneses. They came to win, and almost did. Give them some credit. I hate to repeat myself, but Chizik inherited a woefuly short stocvked cupboard, and it isn't going to be much beter for another one or two years. what is giveng Auburn wins is superior coaching, some good luck, a very few great players, and a great team atitude. .

    Perfectly said! Next year, hopefully Cam will stay and give us a chance to do well again since our depth drops off a cliff next year. Having him in the game gives you a chance to win any game.

    Some thing has to be done

    Something will be done, I promise you. The problem is it's going to be take a couple more years of good recruiting to fix. We need to accept the fact that this is the way our D is going to be for a while. We'll play decent in some games and give up some points in others. And yes we'll probably lose a game because of it.

    We've got SEC caliber Dline and linebackers. We do not have a SEC caliber secondary. That's not going to change overnight.

    I'm going to take this win and enjoy it. It's the first time in a long while that Auburn has had a better record than Bama. Enjoy it for a week at least.
