Gutsiest performance by an AU player

  • I thought that while we're in wait and see mode on our OC and new commits, it might be fun to plumb the collective memories or folks on this board of some of the gutsiest performances by an AU player. Not the superstar moments but the ones where players played through various injuries and literally left it all on the field. I'll start by going way back to Bobby Strickland. He broke his leg during the bama game but still played the whole game - can't remember if it was in '69 or '70. Then there's Beasley getting knocked out cold at the beginning of the bama game then coming back to play "lights out", literally. I'm sure we all have our own memories. I'd be interested in reading yours.

  • 1981 game vs Florida
LB Danny Skutack played most of the game with a broken leg.

Strickland actually broke his leg in the Mississippi state game and came back to play in the Gator Bowl. He did not play against bammer that year, 1970. We were missing more than one linebacker that day and James Owens and Ronnie Ross moved from offense to start at that position. However, it was a very gutsy performance in the bowl game. Beasley got knocked out right in front of me that afternoon. He came back to play and played great but I believe he says today that he had no idea where he was. In either 1978 or 1979 Danny Skutak was playing linebacker and fractured his leg, I believe it was against NCstate. He played the rest of the game.

  • I’ve got two candidates, and these are just off the top of my head … been working out this evening with some 12oz. curls …

Stacy Danley – late 80’s early 90’s vs. Ohio State in a bowl game … vicious hit, knocked him out cold. TV break … trainers … finally Pat Dye goes out and instructs him to get up and walk off the field … never let your opponent think that they’re tougher than you. Stacy came back in and ran for 150.

Shan Morris – mid 80’s vs. Alabama at Legion Field (the neutral site). Knocked Bobby Humphrey out of bounds inside the 10 and completely blew everything out of his knee … I think it was the last play he ever made. Anyway, I remember seeing him around campus on crutches, and will always remember his sacrifice in helping us beat Bama that year. After all of these years I can still remember his name … THAT is an Auburn hero!

I'm sure that there are many more, but these are two from my era.

  • Mark Dorminey made the hit against uat that caused a pop up fumble return by Drinkard and led to a touchdown for us vs them getting points. Later in the game , Bo over the top was a winner but wouldnt have mattered if Mark, playing on surgically repaired knees, hadnt come back for THE game and delivered that hit...one tough guy that Dye loved.

  • Trey smith's game against bammer. came out of no where and blistered bammer defense I like how he chose his number 22. Since he couldn't have his dads number of 55. He chose to have 22 which was 55 upside down. He gets my vote.

  • Wes Byrum in 2007 vs. Florida in the Swamp. Must have had ice running thru his veins to kick that winning field goal not once, but twice. Not to mention he was a true freshman and it was no chip shot.

Knew my memory was a little fuzzy :-) Skutak was one tough SOB. Guess I was confusing Owens and Ross going over to defense for that game - knew it was a memorable one though!

  • I would have to go with my good friend in school Josh Thompson. An undersized nose guard played with every single ounce of energy he had and led Auburn in tackles in 07. I think that game vs. The updykes Tubbs even gave him a shout out at either half time or post game that we all needed the heart of Josh Thompson

Shan Morris actually came back and was part of the great '88 defense. Unfortunately, he did give up the winning TD pass in one of the most gut-wrenching losses in Auburn history against LSU in '88. He was a fierce hitter for sure.

  • Another incredibly gutsy performance was in the 1986 Iron Bowl. Brent Fullwood tore his ACL in the fourth quarter. He was on the sideline writhing in agony. He went back in the game and tore off a 20 yard run. Three plays later, Tillman ran the reverse into the end zone.

He played in the bowl game that year (USC citrus), so surely he didn't have a full ACL tear?

Sometime read the account of the 1970 Iron Bowl. I believe you can find it in Clyde Bolton's book, "War Eagle." The team lost to Georgia in an upset two weeks before the Iron Bowl. I don't remember if it was the week of the Iron Bowl or the week before but Pat Sullivan tells about the brutal practice they had one day. One of the offensive coaches, maybe have been Gene Lorendo, said "get ready, the old man plans to find out who wants to play against bama." Sullivan knew what that meant and said that they had a long practice. It was like a scrimmage and one of the most brutal he had ever experienced. My memory is a little fuzzy. I don't know if we had some players get hurt in that scrimmage or not but coach Jordan did indeed find out who really wanted to play against bammer. That Iron Bowl will always be one of my favorites for two reasons. One is that it was the first Iron Bowl I ever attended. The second is that the team was beat up beyond belief and still came crawled out of a 17 - 0 hole and won. In my life of watching Auburn football I consider it the greatest job coach Jordan ever did for a single game, outstanding.

  • During my time i'd have to say Carnell Williams at home against Syracuse. Dude had like 40 carries and the game winning TD. He took some shots that night. Had like 201 rushing yards. I think the game winner gave him a concussion!

I have read that book. think I still have it around here somewhere. Your description does bring back stir some of my memories :-)

Skutack (sp?) gets my vote. He was #58. My best friend wore that number in high school because of that game. One tough sumbuck!

Sorry but it was Gabe Gross who wore #22 because his Dad, Lee, wore #55. Lee was one of Shug's Amazins!
