Gus Malzahn and Ole Miss

  • I've not been on the "go get Gus" band wagon....not really at all. Just feel like we don't know enough about him as a head coach, as the team he took over had won 10 games last year and he has a senior QB.

    But I'm watching Ole Miss rack up nearly 300 yards in the first half at LSU right now, via Hugh Freeze's offense, which is Gus Malzahn's offense. It's a "spread" in some regards, but as most who look a little deeper into Gus' offense, it's no "fun n gun" or "air raid" scheme. Even if we couldn't do it well last year, it is based around a power run game, and then play-action off of that, all with a good tempo.

    As Ole Miss has proven this year, you don't have to have a Cam Newton to do it well. It also doesn't require a running QB, as Chris Todd and both QBs Gus had at Tulsa, have proven. Ole Miss was 0-8 in the SEC last year, 2-10 overall. This year, they sit at 5-5, 2-4 in the conference. But that includes a very close 3 point loss to Texas A&M and a one-point loss to Vanderbilt. They could easily be 4-2 in the SEC instead of 2-4.

    And then, of course, they lead LSU in Red Stick. They may still lose big, but the fact that they can be this competitive this quickly is very impressive on the part of Hugh Freeze (and just highlights the trash we've been forced to watch this year....we have two new coordinators...they have an entire new staff).

    Anyway, if you play that offense physically, I think it can be very effective, even without a Cam. If we ended up with Gus, I think I could manage to be optimistic.

    Freeze would also not be a had hire either. I think he's going to be a winner as well. Let me be clear, I could be optimistic with Gus as well but I think Auburn could do better ala Jimbo or Bob Stoops.

    Cam's season obscures the fact every one of Gus's QB's prior put up huge #'s, including one Chris Todd. Many on here treat 2010 as if it were an anomaly, when in reality the anomaly was 2011, with a young line and QB's and a head coach who put the brakes I the Hurry-Up after a few games.

    My prediction is if we don't get him, someone will - and within a couple years he'll be putting up offensive numbers a la Oregon.

    Again, I'm sure he's a fine Christian man, etc., etc. But he helped to create the mess we have now and he is NOT the guy to come back and clean it up. NO!!! crackwhip

    I'm just not sure he can handle the football program... not the team, but the program... any better than Chizik. He's still not too far from being a HS coach. He couldn't handle Nutt... he just walked off or was fired in midseason. If he comes into the same athletic department, I'm just not sure what he does with it. Will he walk off like last year?

    I know he can make an offensive team go. No doubt there.

    Yes,Yes,Yes!!! Gus.
    These offensive players are his, he's much more responsible for 2010 than Chizik.
    His offense is being copied in many places, look at Clemson. WDE!!

  • If y'all want to settle for mediocrity, go ahead. Ole Miss is NOT the standard we need to look to. Especially at they are about to lose their seventh game of the year. Auburn is NOT a mediocre program and does NOT have to settle for Gus and his touchy-feely coaching style!!! bs_sign

    We do NOT need a coach who coddles players the way Gus does!!! We need a coach who will SET THE BAR HIGH AND NOT LET UP!!! banghead

  • It's VERY interesting that this came up tonight in more than one thread. I came on here to start a thread about this topic until I saw the others. We are all seeing what the HUNH and spread are doing to John Chavis' awesome defense. I've been wondering lately if it would double whammy our offense by going back to the HUNH next year or if we should give the pro-style the time (and freedom under a new coach) to develop. It is absolutely crystal clear after the past two weeks that we MUST go back to a HUNH. When you consider Saban's comments about it a few weeks ago, see what it did to Saban's phenomenal D, see what it's doing to LSU's great D, and all together the havoc it creates in all conferences against all types of defenses, we have to return to it now. Another thing, dual threats are the wild card that no D coord. Wants to attempt to prepare for or deal with on Saturday. We should only be recruiting them from here on out, as long as it is relevant, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. What has won the last two Heismans? dual threat. What are the top two in heismanology right now? Dual threats. They are exciting, but more importantly to winning, they change games.

    In terms of bringing Gus back, we've traveled that road and its time for a new one for several reasons. There are more dynamic and versatile spreads out there than Gus' so called spread which is really read option to play action. We can find an HC or OC which will have an O just as good or better than Gus's without bringing back a coach who has the potential baggage at AU that Gus may bring and/or have with some players.

  • Spread running formations simply work. It's easier to get mismatches when the defense it's trying to cover the whole field.
